Wintergreen rubbers
« on: February 19, 2010, 09:28:15 AM »
I have heard of a few neat tricks in my time but this thing with the Wintergreen renewing the carb boot rubber seemed a bit out there.
Not that I don't believe everything I read here ::) but I had to try it.
Much to may amazement, IT WORKS!

Yup, sure does.  Jury's still out on the long-term effects but it certainly softens them up with no immediately apparent ill effects.

From the title I thought you were talking about flavored condoms.   ;D ;D

It's a little tough to find but I can't believe someone in the Netherlands doesn't have it. I'm sure Amazon would ship it to you  ;D

only 6 months??  man, you must be the first "long term" test since this topic was brought up a little while ago!  can you describe your conditions Iggy?  like bike, how many times you ride it, etc...

i don't want to have to do this to the boots everytime i need to put the carbs back on in the future!!

I did it almost a year ago and had the carbs off when I Kreemed my tank this last October. They were supple enough that a few minutes in boiling water was enough to make getting the rack back in easy but NOTHING like when I initially hit them with the wintergreen oil. They snicked right on by hand first time.

75 CB750K - initially wintergreened sometime around March or April last year
Daily rider - fairly short trip - sub 10 miles
Parked outside

Overall I think it's worth doing for sure but no substitute for new boots - I still can't see dropping $80 - 100 on em when I don't have any air leaks and shouldn't have to have them off the bike more than once every couple years - if that - now that it's running right.

I found wintergreen oil at an old time pharmacy.
They use the oil as a liniment. I think three ounces was $10.00.

Now I need the zyleen but they only sell it by the gallon!

I tested a 750 K0 inlet rubber by soaking  in Tri-Aryl phosphate ester (Reofos 50) at 70 degrees Centigrade (it is a plasticizer for Nitrile Rubber / PVC ). It softened up Ok - that was about 4 months ago. Will have to check its pliability again. It is still in the boot (trunk to non- 'Limeys'   ;D) of my car ! This plasticizer is flame retardant too.

Have not tried the airbox rubber yet - my analysis was that it was not nitrile rubber but a form of PVC (this is an early K0 about 3000 later than Sandcast with the crappy styrene resin Airbox)  -  airbox replaced with LPM PU one - which is great.

Cheers

I was ready with by bag of "special" words I use when installing carbs but didn't need them.
This was the easiest carb install ever!
Considering this is a full resto job, I will probably pony up the dosh and buy new ones but for now, it's all good.

Rob

Rob go to t chemical supplier and ask for Methyl salicylate, tha "active ingredient" AFAIK.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Methyl_salicylate

BTW, Be careful

Safety and medicinal use

In pure form, methyl salicylate is toxic, especially when taken internally. A single teaspoon of methyl salicylate contains 7g of salicylate,[9] which is equivalent to more than twenty-three 300 mg aspirin tablets. The lowest published lethal dose is 101 mg/kg body weight in adult humans.[10] It has proven fatal to small children in doses as small as 4 mL.[3] A 17 year-old cross-country runner at Notre Dame Academy on Staten Island, died April 3, 2007, after her body absorbed high levels of methyl salicylate through excessive use of topical muscle-pain relief products.[1

Thor's #12 tire prep. It's 100% wintergreen and I paid $17.00 US for a quart. The xylene/wintergreen worked great for my rubbers...

It can be found here:
