I Just Had Myself A Ball! So Funny!
« on: February 19, 2010, 06:12:05 PM »

My Daughter Karla was up in Fort Smith this afternoon after her work, with her Waiver worker and I was supposed to go pick her up about 6PM. So, I went in the GTX to pick her up (she likes to ride in it nearly as much as I do) and thought I'd surprise her and we'd eat Supper out. Well, we did that and as we were heading back to Greenwood, on I-540, some young guys pulled up beside me in a Pontiac Trans Am (I was boxed in and couldn't go anywhere and the lane they were in , was open in front of them) and shot ahead like BIG DOGS! ::) Well, we both got off of the interstate and were heading down U.S. Hwy71S and after a bit, I eased up beside them. We cruised along for just a little bit and they weren't acting quite as cocky. Then, I dropped it down in 3rd and gassed it, shooting forward.
Then traffic got a little bit heavier as we came upon some other cars. Next thing I knew the Trans Am was no where in sight! A little further down the hwy, I saw them way up the road and suddenly they turned off. ::)  :D Now, I had no intention of racing them out there on hwy 71. They don't know that though. I think they expected that I wouldn't respond to them and they could feel like thet blew me off! Should have seen the look on their faces when they heard the GTX sound off, when I nailed it! ;D Made my day! Man, if felt GOOD to feel the power AND to hear that 440 talking! Sure am glad there weren't any cops around too! ::)

I must agree, big inches pouring big decibels out of big pipes and a sudden gain in speed always have that reaction, no matter if they are Mopar, GM, or even a Ford, lolol.

Yeah Jeff, I think they figured that they would make their big splash, make an impression and leave. Surprise! That ol' GTX has a Big Bark! ;D

There was very little stock from the day that could stick with the 440. The 440 six pack gave many a hemi a bad case of the fits. I've got all my magazines from back in the day and there is one comparison between a 1969 440 GTX auto 3.91 with air and a 1969 hemi runner 4-gear and 4.10 Dana. The GTX was used as a magazine test car prior to running against the runner. Don Grotheer was to do the comparison and wrenching as needed. The magazine editors had complained that it would be unfair as the GTX was auto with air and 3.91 plus it was a magazine mule and abused. Well right out of the box it was laying down 13.10s at 106-107. That's pretty friggin' incredible for a stock abused vehicle. Don had to wrench on the runner, friggin' with timing tire pressures to get the runner to match that starting off. The GTX couldn't best its 13.10, and they did get the runner into 13.00 with the factory parts. Slicks, jetting, headers and a new advance curve and the runner was into the 12.28 range - out of the GTX's reach, but as delivered the 440 is a force to be reckoned with.

Now I HAD heard about the 440 6pack giving the Hemi cars problems. I know that the 4barrel 440 is rated at 375hp. Mine has been given the Purple Cam, I've got the specs here somewhere (not lost, just out of sight momentarily), Block and head have been decked,
11 t0 1 comp. Holley 750 w/vacuum secondaries, electronic ignition, Zoom clutch, Headers with flowmasters and 3.55 gears. That's the best I know of, right now. I hope that the windage tray has been retained. The windage tray is supposed to be good for 15hp by keeping the oil from off of the crank (I remember using  a swinging bucket as an example of how the windage tray helps. if you swing the bucket ABOVE water, it moves back and forth freely , but if you allow the water to splash upon the bucket as you try to swing it, it will slow the movement of the bucket.). I don't know if I can tell by looking at the bottom of the engine, if the tray is in there or not. Maybe I can, since the oil pan and the tray bolt directly on the bottom of the engine. Anyway, I'd be curious about the hp of this engine as it sits. It responds beautifully! Lots of times, as I am coming up to go by folks, several will roll their window down, listen, smile and give me a "thumbs up" as I go by them. I'm just glad I was able to get this car AND get out on the road with it, as it DEFINITELY raises MY spirits! I hope I don't sound conceited, cause I'm Not, I'm Just Happy to have some Vintage Mopar Iron to take out on the road. 8) ;)

Thanks for the input Mike, always good to hear from you, Bill ;)

By the way, I wish I'd of been in THIS car back in 1970, when I was in California in the Air Force and had that play session with that new 455 Trans Am, at least I could have played longer! ;)

Now if my GTX looked as good as this road runner and had the HOOD and all that goes with that hood, This sucker would REALLY pack a punch! 8)

Ahhh a T5 A12 runner. And he's got the runner wheel discs. The remain stationary as the car rolled on down the road. Those are now repo'ed and there's more cars wearing them now than ever in '69.

Funny how he has the long supports in the front and none in the rear. Makes it looked like a hinged hood. A buddy of mine had an A12 bird in '69 and for the first few months it was a blast to pull into a station and pull the hood off to "check" the oil. Most people were speechless. The looks from those in other cars was priceless.

The most curious thing about the A12 package was that you couldn't get disc brakes with it. You could get them in a 383 runner and also in the hemi runner, but check of A12 and it was drums only. Weird.

seems to me Bill that the 750 Holley might be a touch small for that motor. i'd be looking at one of the hp850 Holleys if it were mine. it would really wake up the top end.

Jeff, As it stands now, I'll probably leave the 750 on there (at least for the time being). I've got a buddy here, who has had several road runners and a GTX over the years and he's wanting me to "dump" the Holley, for an Edelbrock. He talks about the Holley's being bad about "washing down the cylinders" and the Edelbrocks as being easier to deal with. My own experience has been that ALL of my previous Mopars (2-'66 Chargers and 2-'69 road runners w/ 383s, except for 1 440) all had Carter Carbs (AFBs & AVS)and ran pretty good and all, but on my last road runner, I pulled the Carter off, stuck a Holley on and instantly had quicker response at the throttle. Now, maybe the Carters needed to be rejetted or something, but they just didn't respond like that Holley.

Got lots of things I need to do to this one, but glad that I was able to put it on MY driveway. ;) 8)
