How do I remove the baffle from a MAC muffler
« on: February 22, 2010, 06:23:10 AM »
Hey folks.  Maybe I shouldn't be asking this question, but...

I bought a MAC muffler for my CB400f cafe project, and it's HUGE, and UGLY!  Thinking about a modification to it, and I want to remove the "removable" baffle so I can have a look inside.  I drilled out the rivet but I'm finding that the baffle does not want to budge at all.  How do I get this thing out???   Thanks!

I have a painted 4-1 Mac for my 750 . I have also tried to get my baffle out calmly . I took the screw out (no rivet on mine ) and grabbed the baffle to pull it out with vice grips , nothing . My silencer is cone shaped ( same as avatar above ) . I think if I remove it and tap it FIRMLY on a block of wood placed on the floor back end first the shock might set it free . I'm guessing they paint it after the baffle goes in .

I'll give that a shot on my lunch break, thanks.  I have a bad feeling that puppy doesn't want to come out, though...

Remove the whole rear piece. Get a wooden stake or pvc pipe and knock it out from the tapered end.

I think I'll be busy going for a ride.

Good luck!

I've replaced the baffle with a 2" Harley type baffle, not too loud but pretty decent sound. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sk9YyBJ_GkE

Hootis that bike is awesome, man!  I think I emailed you a while back to ask about your handlebars.  I bought the same set of renthals but I'm gonna start out with clubmans and see how I like it.  Since my exhaust is a megaphone type muffler, I need something that's wider on one end and narrower on the other.  I found something on ebay that might work but could you send me a link or picture of the type of baffle you're using so I can get a visual?  Thanks!   I'm pretty sure I'm going to end up cutting into this brand-new MAC muffler...

Wrenchmuch--Don't be afraid to use a LOT of force (I practically threw it down).  I didn't do this, but you may want to wrap the end of your exhaust in a t-shirt or something soft.  I did not hurt the chrome at all, though.  Oh, I also sprayed a little PB blaster along the mating surface between the baffle and the inner wall of the pipe.  Probably didn't make a difference but it didn't hurt, either...
