Not easy to roll -- I think it was mostly air needed in the tires. Plus the gates aren't open overnight, I just learned. I think I gotta ask (or a$k) the super in the morning if he'd be OK with me rolling it away. The thing hasn't moved for two years and has so much bird #$%* on it that I doubt the super has any secret desire for the bike.

Tell him its not worth anything and you just want some parts off it, that way he won't start rubbing his hands together and put a stupid price on it......Just did the same thing with a 1995 Mitsubishi lancer and got it for $100 dollars, 2 fuses later and it is my sons first car....bargain.... ;D

I walked right into the lot at around 6, past the super who was organizing the trash, and started pumping up the tires. He asked me what was up and I told him the sanitation department told me just to take it. He asked if I was going to take the other one too (454 LTD -- ugly ugly bike) and I said no. I rolled it five very tough blocks home (stuck brake -- I sprayed some wd40 in there and didn't pull the lever, but still...)  now it's under a cover on my block -- too much ice to get it into the yard yet. Now to take down the VIN and determine whether there's anybody who lays claim to it......

I'd have taken the LTD also....if it is actually NYC property after they tag it, you're probably saving the taxpayers money by keeping it out of the auction system. It would have to be hauled off, stored for a while, inventoried, then hauled to auction, and a rusty hunk like that prolly only brings $10 or $20, so the city isn't going to come close to recovering the expense of removal or the wages of the various city handlers. It's a little easier out here, as long as you get a bill of sale from a "previous owner" (whether or not any money actually changes hands), you can apply for a lost title, which involves sending a registered letter to the last PO explaining that you have purchased the car and need their signature on the enclosed form. If the registered letter comes back undeliverable, it's as good as a previous title, or the PO fills out the form and sends it back to you. Kinda unlikely the PO would try to squeeze you for bucks, since either they or another purchaser farther down the line, abandonded it and no one really wants to claim the possible liability of storage fees or some such. it is also fairly easy to put a storage lein on something like that  that is actually abandonded on your property, or property under your control.

my wife and I rescue wire hair fox terriers and we have gone to NYC and St. Louis to pick them up.  Bikes can be alot more fun but they are cold in the bed and do not greet you at the door.  My dog does not like loud noises but when I crank up elke he does not even move.  Dog has a nice leather jacket and goggles.

I told ya, you need a mallet to bop the brakes...

If sanitation has a lien on it, then just part it.. or see if it runs, then try to find a non runner with reggie..

If you can get it registered, change the color to GUANO... ;)

shoulda told him the 454 was not there "long enough".. give you time to think about it..

Be interesting to send someone to ask about it, in a few weeks, and see what happened.. :o

Now that just sounds a wee bit like stealing.  Remind me to not leave my bike in my backyard.  HA

What's a 454 LTD when it's at home?
Good on ya for the rescue, shoulda filmed it and stuck it on Utube. ;D

OK I just Googled 454 LTD and it turns out to be a Kawasaki street cruiser, there are even internet sites dedicated to them, go back for it, the parts will pay for your 350 rebuild.

I think the thing I most like about motorcycling is the speed at which my brain must process information at to avoid the numb skulls who are eating pies, playing the ukulele, applying make-up etc in the comfort of their airconditioned armchairs as they make random attempts to kill me!!!!!!!

Keep us posted man. This sounds interesting. Hey, if you need help with a title, I've got a guy I'm going to try to use to get a title for mine. I'm going to send him my info and pictures in a couple of days, and see what happens. His username is impala66k on ebay if you want to check him out. I'll post a thread on here if everything goes well with him.

Covers are all we have in NYC. Without a cover it looks like a vehicle, but with a cover it looks like a blob.

So I snapped a few poor quality pictures -- it was early in the morning so I had to use the flash and it didn't come out so well. You'll get the picture.

Disclaimer: if you know anything at all about ownership of this particular bike, please PM me. I saved the thing from the heap, but I won't consider it to be mine until i've done all I can to see if there's an owner out there. I'll be going to the DMV to do paperwork on Thursday, which will likely involve mailing the last known owner, but if someone happens to recognize these pictures, please let me know by PM. If you want the bike and can tell me the VIN and live within reasonable distance, I'll pay to have the bike delivered to you. If you live far, we can make arrangements.
