Pattern for drilling Rear Drum Cover?
« on: February 20, 2010, 04:38:33 PM »
I see a lot of guys drilling out their drum brake covers, anyone have a pattern they use or some tips?  thinking of doing the front sprocket cover as well...

Did a search... couldn't find anything - links?

I'd just mark it up with a sharpie and put it back on the bike, if you like the look center punch gently and drill away.  Check some threads by guys like IndustrialCafe, he's wise in the ways.

try to stay away from the ridges on the backside of the plate (they are structural)
i like to polish first and then drill so you dont smear the edges of the holes
ive seen some that dont really have a defined pattern, kinda looks like someone shot it with a shot gun, i prefer to layout a nice pattern before i drill, but thats just my personal preference

i was wondering if drilling the holes is a completely cosmetic thing or does it have a small benefit aswell?

i found this on ebay

correct me if i'm wrong, because I'm new at this (CB SOHC convert from the CB DOHC world), but is that cover not a wet case on the 750's?

I believe it to be purely cosmetic... although It could be argued (nit picking) that the vents would help cool the rear drum...

wouldn't that allow your brakes to get wet? isn't that a bad thing or am I thinking wrong on this? it seems they would swell a bit or something. it does look cool though.

it definitely has its appeal but if your arguing the cooling factor its purely for racing, because you would have a wet problem....but then again sometimes races are in the rain....but then again, they also usually do a full bike cleaning and look over to right?

thanks, i dont remember exactly what sizes i used because i did that awhile ago, but im pretty sure that the big ones are 1/4" and the small ones are 1/8"

i think the holes could provide some cooling under repeated heavy braking (racing) other wise i think its pretty much cosmetic, maybe it gives the brake dust someway to get out. as far as that engine cover on ebay i think it just looks cool, (I.C. is that your listing?  :))

ya, water could probably get in there but i really dont plan on riding that bike in the rain

yeah, this build is purely a nice weather/show bike.  I have my 81 DOHC for the daily rider.
