tech support help needed--no spark
« on: February 21, 2010, 07:28:33 AM »
Hi  again I just started to work though this 400f. I had an old battery that I charged overnignt but the volts only came up to 9.6V. I placed it in the bike and got a slight green glow at the gear selector indicator-- gave it a few kicks and no spark at the plugs (grounded to the motor) I pulled the stator cover and points cover off first and no rust and everything looks in order. Do I need a fully charged batt. to generate spark at the plugs? Also any other ideas- how do you guys sort out no spark issues. thanks for your help and input regards

9.6 volts after an all all night charge tells you that you have a battery that is knackered. Even 11 volts is not good.

A good charging system might give a brief spark via the battery to the plugs but you do need a new battery regardless.

you can check spark using your car battery. don't follow the procedure for normal car jumping! just disconnect the motorcycle battery (and might as well take it out and use it as a door stop), disconnect the car battery from the car ( i take mine out) and then connect it to your bike with jumpers. that should allow you to test for spark. good luck.

by the way, your bike looks cool.

Whenever you connect a battery (car or M/C), double, even triple check that you are connecting POS 2 POS  and NEG to ground.  Hooking up a battery backwards will fry many sensitive components!

Sure.
Is it hard?
Not if you have the right attitudes. It’s having the right attitudes that’s hard.

Yes, you need a good battery.  The bikes alternator makes no power without the electromagnet excited.  Doesn't matter how hard you spin it.

No electrical power, no spark.
