Headlight Honda CB350F
« on: February 21, 2010, 04:12:10 PM »
Hi:

I'm working on my headlight for my 1972 CB350F, a Canadian model, if there are any known differences versus USA.

There are two 5mm diameter Phillips head screws holding the chrome ring and reflector assembly to the plastic headlight shell.  I need to replace these screws.  Are these screws really 5 mm diameter with a thread pitch of 0.9 mm?  Every 5 mm screw I have in my ample supply is 0.8 mm pitch.  And the threaded tabs on the chrome ring are not 0.8 mm pitch.  I have done the thread gage thing with a magnifying lens.

Also, my headlight ring/reflector assembly does not match the fiche in Babbits and Bike Bandit.  Did we get a Canadian model or European?

Thanks guys, Don

I would re-tap the threads to the pitch you need.  By the time you find the screws, they will cost more than a new assembly.  I bought a new assembly in chrome on ebay for under $50.00 with the headlight included

IF the threads on your headlight are not 0.8 someone must have %$#@# them up for you. A standard 5mm screw should fit. I think later headlights like 750s use 6mm 1.0 thread.

Thanks for the replies gents.  I think that I will "ease" a tap to make these threads 0.8 mm pitch.  I wonder if somebody ran a 32 tpi screw into these headlight ring tangs.  But 32 tpi calculates to 0.79 mm which is close to the metric 0.8 mm.  If I do this for 0.9 mm pitch it calculates to 28.2 tpi.

I'll bet a PO just rammed in some 28 tpi machine screws.

Regarding Honda, I've got a big Honda superstore within range.  They have been very nice to me, but something changed.  I know the financial return helping me with a 20$ order for an older bike is much lower than selling the latest bike, blower, or mower.  But helping me is more profitable than sitting around doing nothing, which seems a chief employee occupation at this time of year.
