[76K w/ 78F Forks] [Pics] My forks look jacked up...
« on: February 21, 2010, 12:22:53 PM »
76 K with 77/78F front forks/wheel/brakes etc.

I don't know how a K -> F front end conversion is supposed to go, but this one looks like it's not correct.  I may be over reacting, but this difference in spacing bothers me.

The spacing between the right disc, and the right fork varies about 2-4 mm from the distance from the left disc and the left fork, seen below:

The axle itself is protruding into the right fork, but out of the left fork, seen below:

Are these things backwards?  I've seen pics where the speedo cable is on the right side, mine is on the left.

I wouldn't think that this is how it was supposed to be on a factory 77/78 F CB750, why is it this way on mine?  The guy I bought it from bought it from a shop, where the previous owner did the conversion - I know nothing about it.  All he told me was it's a new[er] front end.

I don't like the ComStar wheels to begin with, so I'm in talks with a member of this forum in getting a 75F single-disc spoked wheels to replace these (Will I need new forks with these?)''

Anyone wanna buy this (F&R) if I go to spokes? :)

maybe just the axel is backwards? does the wheel itself seem off center? something is not right for sure, the axel should be almost flush at both sides of the forks...

At least the axle is wrong. Usually the butt end of the axle goes up against the speedo drive. The nut end goes opposite the speedo drive. Addtl, the nut goes on with its hex to the inside. (You have it that way, but on the wrong side.)

After that see how the wheel lines up.

Thanks for the clarification!
I just reread your post and see you say the speedo drive is on the left side. Looking at a fiche for a 78F, the drive is on the left, which is different from earlier models. The fish does show the axle going in as I described, butt end against the drive, nut end opposite the drive.

Occasionally there is a discussion about why we should patronize local shops. This is an example of why I don't if I don't have to. No self respecting shop should have let that out the door like that, whether or not they had done it. They don't even have to be familiar with the model. Any mechanic can look at that and see somethings not right.

The problem going back to a 75 wheel will probably lie in the mounting lugs for the disc brake caliper. Will they be in the right place to get the caliper on the disc properly.

That may (probably)  require that you match the fork legs to the wheel.

Information on the differences on each year is sparse, from what I've been able to search on.  There are a lot of duplicate threads on doing this swap but since the years vary so much and my bike is a mixture of K & F parts, it's hard for me to really know what I need.

Thanks for the info, though.
