Headlamp Upgrade - '76 CB400F

Looking to upgrade headlamp to a halogen bulb and am wondering if anyone out there has any suggestions.  The Cibie halogen lamp/bucket comes with a higher watt bulb that'll drain the battery and the fix is to downgrade to a 35w bulb, but I wanted to see if anyone has found a light upgrade that doesn't require modifying the bulb and will just bolt right on.

I don't know what brand mine is, but there's a big "H4" stamped on the lens.  I'm running a standard 55/60 watt lamp with no problem, and normallykeep it set on high-beam.  I also added two 'Autozone-special' incandescent indicator lights to the back end (taillight blew out at night, never again riding with a dark rear end).

I thought these came with a standard 55 watt lamp.  Incandescent or halogen, 55 watts is 55 watts.  I believe you just get more light for the power.

I actually just bought one.  I got the 8022 lamp from Candlepower Inc and a 45/45 watt high-efficiency bulb. I was going to get a 35/35 but decided to try the other one.

 About it: It's nice. Bolts right on. I managed to fit it onto my old headlamp ring even though the previous owner had bent it to fit a 6" car headlamp into it. There's a small 1/4 inch gap between the front of the new lamp housing and the headlamp ring because the halogen lamp is flat, not curved. Some people have used foam tape to seal the gap with good results.. The lens adjuster will still work though the captive nut doesn't seem to be as captive as it was. I've had trouble aiming the lamp down far enough, but I think that's a separate issue. Maybe not, but fixable. A Cibie would probably be a little nicer, but this is pretty inexpensive. The bulbs it takes are the standard H4 format.

I also use an H4 60/55 in a cibie in my 400/4, I do lots of town riding in winter so remove the bulbs from the speedo and tacho, 4  x 5w = 20w... problems solved!

Thanks for the info all!  I think the Cibie is the way to go (although expensive...) since a piece of the headlamp bucket cracked recently when putting new bars on the bike.  Looks like I'd still have to locate a new bucket if I went with Candlepower Inc.
