CB550 engine rebuild kits??
« on: February 24, 2010, 03:02:06 PM »
I'm tearing apart my engine, and want to rebuild it.
Are there any recommended rebuild kits?

There's probably a few out there but kinda hard to find.  Hit up David Silver Spares, I  believe they have one.  Keep in mind this doesn't have piston rings, bearings, etc., so know what you need beforehand.

If your tearing into your engine people typically just purchase the things that need to be replaced. Your manual is very good at showing how to take apart the engine and how to measure the pieces to decide whether or not they need to be replaced. I just did this with my 75 550 as well.

The first thing I did was measure the cylinder bore. If it has exceeded the serviceable limit as outlined in the manual then you will need to bore it out. If that is the case then you'll need new larger rings and larger pistons.

If you don't need to bore it out then you can measure your piston diameter and see if its also within serviceable limits. If your pistons are good then measure the piston ring end gap and the side clearance. Just like in your manual!

Also, never reuse old circlips you have to buy new ones. Also, its highly recommended to replace all of the o-rings and gaskets while your in there. Many shops carry kits that have every o-ring and gasket you need.
Its hard to be wrong when you know nothing!
