Need a 12mm compression tester adaptor or some know-how.
« on: April 26, 2005, 03:47:10 PM »
I just bought a compression tester from napa with a 14 and 18 mm adaptor, but it looks as though my bike has 12 mm plugs.  Does anyone have an extra one of these things or have a make-one suggestion?  I tried to beat an insulater out of an old plug to try to make an adaptor, but ended up with a badly mauled plug.

If you have access to a metal lathe, chuck the metal shell of the plug in the head of the lathe and turn off the rounded crimp just above the hex portion. The porcelain center electrode will fall right out. Then you can weld a pipe fitting to it, and you're in business!

I caught the Snap-On truck making his rounds to local repair shops. He knew instantly which adapter I needed and had several on hand. I paid approximately $8 US.

I went with the Craftsman one, It has all different adapters, probably the nicest compression tester I have used, it has a 12mm in it.  But i doubt you want to go spend $49 on another tester.

Thanks for the advice all.  I never thought about the Snap-on guy. He hits our place once a week too.  I already got a motorcycle gear head to make the adaptor at work for me.  It makes him happy to do something different!
