when was the last time...
« on: February 23, 2010, 07:35:09 PM »
when was the last time you read a new post's question, and the thread that follows actually stays on topic?

This is possibly a personal rant, but am I the only one to notice this trend lately?  Or has it always been this way?

It's been that way for as long as I've been on here.... that being said, I may be one of the culprits of the in thread tangent.

also, It looks to happen on the dumb threads, like that bam631/631girl aye-hole

I have noticed, even in my threads, that it goes

-work and technical
-commercial (thread jacking banter)
-work and technical

Yeah, it happens, unless the thread isn't one that has a straight forward subject. I'll have to say that I have, on occasion, been guilty as well. Not intentional and when it happens, I apologize and try to get back on track.  Doesn't really bother me, if it happens a little, I kinda expect it, to an extent. It CAN get to be a pain, if it happens AND you don't get ANY input that you were inquiring about. I feel like there's a difference between getting a little off course ( but still getting input wanted) and going completely off track with little to NO input on a particular subject. ;) Just my outlook on the subject. ;)

I have made a conscious effort in the last few months not to post off topic.

I don't really post that much unless it's in the SSDB.  or giving a quick answer to a question.

I haven't really gotten into that thread much, I guess timing plays a part there.

Forum threads are like conversations and take on lives of their own.  In the Open forum I don't think there should be any expectation of a thread staying on topic, because any thread in the open forum is technically "off topic" to begin with.  In the Tech forum, things should really stay on topic as much as possible, but I think that once a person's original question has been answered it's okay to stray to a certain extent.

For the most part, I enjoy how threads get derailed or hijacked, or morph into something else.. One of the ENJOYABLE aspects of a forum..there is the odd time its not fun though..

I really enjoy the SPONTANAITY of it for the most part..

On this forum, The main rule is to keep the non sohc4 Honda stuff, out of the sohc4 topic, the rest is fairly laid back. Suits my non rigid, flexible, unstructured, spontaneous lifestyle really well.

I think the derailing/morphing can bre a plus.. sometimes most online posters that day have already adressed a question, but the derailing keeps it up longer and creates more exposure for more answers later.

Also I bypass a lot of threads, if the title, does not catch my interest.. however, a high post count and a few pages will attract more attention to the thread..

If the OP does not like the direction a thread has gone, they will let people know.. also if the side topic get ennough interest, a new thread will usually spin off as a result..

Relax Alan, its a community, and people like to chat and spend time together.. not entirely a bad thing..

WHO LIKES CAKE?

(sorry alan, had to do it...)

I find most of the threads in the technical sections tend to stay at least marginally on track. Open forums, not really, but then again, they're pretty much the brain-vomit sections of the forums, anyway.
No.

Thanks Gents, I was a little tired and was likely reacting to some newb's misunderstood rant in reply to a correct piece of advice I'd given another newb...ugh.

Hey there Sam! We've had a few days in a row hovering near 7 or 8 Celsius so the snowbanks are getting down to about knee high where I live. Lots of rain today and about 4 degrees C, spring is on the way!

I was driving down the road the other day and felt hungry and thought I should stop and grab a sandwich.  But where do I stop?  There are so many choices......then I remembered, I like cake.

Ive always wondered how many forum members actually ride a motorcycle (and a SOHC at that given its a SOHC forum  ;)) ....seems like a lot are either playing in their garage or are virtual motorcyclists (dont actually ride but are here for the social aspect).

Who actually rides? And I dont mean just down to the shops or around town...daytrips? weekend trips? longer than weekend trips? commuting?

Now that Ive asked the question Im off to start a new thread ;)

I gotta say it tho, I think many havent done enough time, to get to the  "trust in the 750, it will get you there" phase..
