Side covers!
« on: March 10, 2010, 06:20:24 AM »
I am sure this topic has been posted on numerous occasion but time hasn't allowed me to do a proper search of this site - sorry if this is redundant

I am new to the CB750. Most of my experience is with British twins. I purchased 1976 CB750K - it was a barn find completely stock, one owner 7,000 miles, unmolested, covered in birdpooh.

Of course, the old saying is true - if everything is going your way you are in the wrong lane - because five minutes after loading the board that my pal stuck in back of the pickup came loose and took out the right side cover - shattered (on the plus side the badge was saved and i was fortunate that there wasn't more damage)

So my question is where do you get a replacement side cover? I dont care if its stock or a reproduction - this isnt going to be a show bike but I would at least like something that matched the original

(and before i continue - yes lol i know that side cover is the least of my worries with a bike thats sat for X years - its just bugging me and i thought it would be quick fix - guess i was wrong - ebay is $$$$$$)

i see maier makes a replacement but it doesnt look correct and i would end up getting two just to match it up left and right.

so, does any one have one that they would be willing to sell? or can recommend a source for a replacement?

their is a outfit in Australia that makes fiberglass replacements - but i am sure by the time i get down paying the shipping i could have replaced at least one tire

thanks in advance - saw750

Really E-bay is probably going to be your best bet. If the bike is a really nice survivor (do you have a pic) than their is going to be more value with a good stock cover. If it was the oil side then at least they go for a little less. If your lucky maybe a member might have one but good luck getting any minty ones from us  ;D Good luck on the hunt

Try a company, in England I think, It is called low pressure moldings they have a web site and they offer what looks to be side covers made from the original parts. I see wrenchmuch beat me to it.

Factor in the cost of finding, buying, and labor of matching paint if you want to be a stocker stickler.

hey thanks guys i think that LPM might be the way to go.

the side covers were sun faded so i dont have any issue with painting them to match

it was just a bummer - five minutes and one good bump later no side cover : (

i have repaired sidecovers with fiberglass and bondo on the odd triumph with great results but there was just too many pieces missing

in this case i just want it to look right - if the next owner wants to make it show bike then they can have the fun of tracking down a color correct factory original.

now lol maybe i should start a new post to figure out where to to begin with this beast - my best guess is clean off all the bird and cowsht. i will get pics just prior to washing and post

like i said i am new to this. i know it has compression and isnt seized but thats about it. the gent that owned it prior parked it back in 1981 to raise his kids and never looked back

i guess i should figureout how to unseize that front brake..lol - make it a lil easier to push..lol

Just scroll down to the one that says "BATTERY COVER / OIL TANK COVER / TOOLS" and look at the "Alternative" (much cheaper)

I think cmsnl and davidsilverspares sell the LPM side covers. I could be wrong, but there are not very many sources for reproduction side covers. LPM and yamiya750e.com had the best looking reproductions from my searching. In the end I went with davidsilverspares.co.uk instead of ordering direct from LPM because of price and reputation.

LPM's are GREAT. I just bought a set for my F and am super super pleased with them. They are pretty thick, not brittle. Miles ahead of the stock covers.

The backsides do have a somewhat amature feel to them, but i'm the only one that will ever see that side of them. (I grew up in a mold making family, so i probably notice this more than most people)

+1 on LPMs. Just finished painting the pair I purchased and there's nothing not to like about not only the product, but LMP service as well. These covers could easily be mistaken for stock in appearance. The material they use is more flexible than original fiberglass or the cheapo ABS plastic ones you see around. The LPMs are really rugged. I think I read the owner worked for Land Rover before starting this business.

LPM has a website.
The covers are 44 a piece with 8-10 shipping. I bit..
Im going to paint the backs to simulate stock finish and overspray.
Ill never buy a cracked or repaired cover again.

I love my LPMs.  I paid about $110 USD shipped a year or so ago.  Make sure you contact them and tell them you want to do "combined shipping" if you're ordering more than one.  If you order on their website and don't contact them separately, you'll pay more for shipping.
