HOW DO YOU REMOVE IDLE JETS?
« on: February 26, 2010, 08:54:50 PM »
HI ALL!  I HAVE A 1972 CB 750 WITH REBUILT ORIGINAL CARBS.  MY GAS TANK HAS A LITTLE RUST AND BY THE WAY THE BIKE HAS STARTED IDLING AND RUNNING WITH LIGHT THROTTLE, I THINK ONE OR MORE OF MY IDLE JETS HAS BECOME CLOGGED WITH RUST.  MY QUSTION IS AFTER REMOVING THE CARB BAIL, HOW DO YOU REMOVE THE IDLE JETS?  DO THEY PULL OUT OR SCREW OUT?  WHAT IS THE SAFEST AND BEST WAY TO REMOVE THEM?  I PLAN ON USING A VERY SMALL CUTTING TORCH TIP CLEANER TOOL TO UNPLUG THE CLOGGED JETS; HOW WILL THIS WORK OR IS THERE SOMETHING BETTER?  ALL SIGNS POINT TO RUST IN ONE OR MORE IDLE JET, I HAVE FOUND SMALL PIECES OF RUST IN THE BOTTOMS OF THE BAILS WHEN I TOOK THEM OFF.

In that carb, the pilot jet unscrews, and has slots in the end for a screwdriver.   It's the PD style carbs that have pressed in jets.

You don't want to clean the jets with anything abrasive, that may increase their size.  It's only soft brass, and the orifice is calibrated.
The inner hole is about 0.016 inches in diameter.

Usually, just a reverse squirt of aerosol carb cleaner will clear them.  Gummy ones can be soaked first.

I used a nylon bristle from the wifes hairbrush with some carb cleaner to clean out my pilots...a cheapo inline fuel filter is also good insurance to prevent future teardowns

If the stock fuel filter is in good working order, you don't need to add two or three more fuel filters to the carb's supply line.

All too often, cheap fuel filters are added to the gravity fed system, creating big loops of tubing, and it disturbs proper fuel flow to the carbs, as the tubing and filters can't drain against the force of gravity.
