Cleanng oil pickup screen.

What is the accepted practice when it comes to taking care of these things?

I am really averse to taking off the right case cover because its messy, might necessitate a new gasket or permatex and generally looks like a pita.

Last oil change, the oil was free from any metal particulate, and looking down the fill hole into the sump, it looks clean.
Bike has 12k miles and im wondering if I should bother with it.

On the 550 I think the screen is up under the oil pan.

I don't know of any bike that has cleaning of the oil pump pickup screen as a regular maintenance item.  Good idea I suppose, but not necessary. You should clean the centrifugal (dixie cup) filter. We cheat on those by taking off the round cover (Prop the bike to the left a tad so noting runs out) Take the lid off the dixie cup, fish around in there with a rag on a screwdriver until its clean, put the lid back on and the cover. Piece of cake.

What round cover? All I got is a whole crank case cover.

Ooops my bad. I was thinking of the 350. Looks like you need to pull that cover. Your manual should recomend service intervals. But since that's the only way into the filter, I'd say every other oil change or once a year, whichever is more. But that's just me and I've already been wrong once.

Recommended service interval is 6k miles on the filter and pickup screen.

I dont know if the previous owner did anything but it seems as though the engine was out of the bike.

     If it were me I would do it the next time I changed the oil. Then I would know what things look like. If all is well maybe the 6k service interval is OK. If You have to clean out a lot of crud. I would clean it out again sooner that 6k.

6K is correct for cleaning out the centrifugal filter and the pick up screen. Get a new clutch cover gasket and take the permatex in your right hand and either :-
(1) Dump it in the trash or
(2) throw as far away a possible .

If you use that anywhere on the 360 you will end up needing a new head and cam cover along with cam and followers

++++ Get real gaskets!

Silicone is ok in some cases but, a good gasket is unbeatable!
350/360 gasket sets are fairly cheap. Real cheap compared to doing it over!
