Human behavior.
Civil unrest springs from economic unrest.
Whole families feel the pressure of no work and income loss/personal holdings loss.
Governments grow, law enforcement grows, the prison industry benefits. All to put tighter "controls" on the populace.
The "free" people celebrate a dwindling population of those who are "free" and want the government to do more for them or release them from any responsibility of "distasteful matters".
Anyway, my sister-in-law teaches "special ed. Has plenty of stories. These students range from slow mentation or learning disabilities to students tossed from regular class due to disruptive behavior that sabotages learning for the whole class.
Often the "disruptive" student has questionable parenting (if not questionable parentage). Their role models are self chosen based on flamboyant attraction and it is generally accepted that youth tends to lean toward feelings of invincibility, or at least a diminished awareness of "action consequence".
Social outcasts (often economic outcasts) aren't just the shy retiring ones easily forgotten by society. And, accepted social behavior is abandoned when the individual believes there is nothing left to lose.
Ain't the "open forum" great for unloading inner thoughts and general babble?

It's sort of like following the "news" media, except less organized.
