Identifying Speedometer Question
« on: January 30, 2006, 10:46:07 AM »
Okay, so I got my new speedo and tach, but am a little confused.  The gauges are much bigger than the gauges currently on the bike.  I thought they were maybe from a 750, but the redline is about 9250, which in my understanding is correct for 500.  Anyway, maybe someone can explain this too me.  The pictures I have are not great, but maybe able to help.  The first is current (as you can tell it is busted!)  The later is the pic from the auction.

Thanks
Joe

In the US, only the 71 and 72 Cb500 had the small instruments. In 73, larger ones were standard and remained so until end of production models in 78.

The ones in the pic appear correct for the 73 CB500 or the 74 CB550.

Let me know it you don't want them.  My 74 could use a nice set like that.

Would there be any problem using them on my 72?  Basically, would the cables work and the bracket attach?  If so, I think I would like the bigger gauges, otehrwise, they will not work for me.

I think they should work just fine.  Of course, you need the bracket from the newer guages, too.

I have the larger type on my '75 550.  Are the gear ratios the same for both?

It did come with the bracket, so I am in luck!!  Looks like a pretty easy install, the two bolts to bolt it down (I am assuming of course they line up), cables in back and power!

I think so.  The ratio is stamped on the back the instrument; compare numbers.  But, unless the drive gear off the cam is different between 500 and 550, it'll work.
