Scotland / North Carolina
« on: February 26, 2010, 05:06:37 PM »
Hey Andy and some of you folks on here might find this interesting.

Being a native North Carolinian of Scottish ancestry and really fond of Scottish/Gaelic/ and blue grass music here is why.

"Approximately 1.5 million Scots have immigrated to America (Gormley, 2000). Today, the state of North Carolina has more citizens of Scottish ancestry than any other state or country, including Scotland (Highlander, 2000)."

NC has a Highland Games event in the summer - July 8-11 at Grandfather Mt.
http://www.gmhg.org/
There is some nice twisty road in that area as well.  Maybe some riding pants under my kilt, and my shepherd in a sidecar...

Ha! I got a kick out of the Scottish ancestry being higher in NC than anywhere in the world including Scotland.
I'm sure that is changing with the transplant coming to NC, so I suspect Nova Scotia will soon take the lead there.
Just a guess since I've never seen the figures.

We also have some Spanish Barb horses and while back I read that the dna typing of these horses now shows
a greater purity of blood than those found on the Iberian peninsula, their point of origin.

We've never made it to the GM Highland Games, maybe this year.
We also have them local at Radford University (Team name the Highlanders).

My home county of Robeson NC puts on the games at the historic Flora McDonald School.

The Scottish people have a long and rich history in the state of North Carolina. After the battle of Culloden in 1745, highland clearances left many Scottish clans with no home and nowhere to go. During the time after the clearances, North Carolina became one of the most popular destinations. The local government in North Carolina urged Highland Scots to come to North Carolina by offering them land and tax exemptions. At first, many groups kept to the eastern shores of North Carolina,

Yow- hop on a hot motorcycle seat in the summer wearing a kilt and you've invented a new Scottish delicacy usually associated with Howard Johnson's.

 Yeah RM the Scots dispersed around the world I wonder how many English were killed by Scots in your revolution and other ones I wonder if it made up for Culloden I know in my family it was regarded with sadness, and hard feelings about bonnie prince charley ( drunken arrogant bastard, that couldn't manage a gang bang in a brothel ) I've run into people of clan ancestry every where I've gone in your country and mine from southern California, to Whitehorse in the Yukon, Vancouver to Greenwood Nova Scotia.

First State Governors

When the United States were first formed and the thirteen states selected their first governors, nine were of Scottish ancestry:

    * Archibald Bulloch (Georgia)
    * George Clinton (New York)
    * William Livingston (New Jersey)
    * John MacKinlay (Delaware)
    * Jonathan Trumbull (Connecticut)
    * Richard Caswell (North Carolina)
    * Patrick Henry (Virginia)
    * Thomas McKean (Pennsylvania)
    * John Rutledge (South Carolina)

First Cabinet Members

In addition, all the members of the first American cabinet had Scottish ancestry:

    * Secretary of State - Thomas Jefferson
    * Secretary of the Treasury - Alexander Hamilton
    * Secretary of War - Henry Knox
    * Attorney General - Edmund Randolph

Also:

    * John Paul (alias John Paul Jones) was a Scotsman, and founder of the U.S. Navy.
    * The breech-loading rifle used during the Revolutionary War was invented by Maj. Patrick Ferguson.
    * Presidents: Polk, Monroe, Buchanan, Jackson, McKinlay, McArthur, and Wilson were of Scottish descent, as were probably others

Well as woodpiles go that ain't bad. I had a girl who asked me how it felt to have Italian in you. I asked her if she wanted to find out. For some reason she took offense. I guess she really disliked Italians.

Ha! Ha!

I was just looking at one of the tree limbs, the Christian side.
The Isle of Mann is where my Christian side came from. Originally McChristian until 1630 or so.
I hope the Isle of Mann doesn't count as being English. :( They did fight against Cromwell.
