Swingarm pivot grease fitting question
« on: February 25, 2010, 01:44:05 PM »
What size or designation is the grease fitting on the swingarm pivot?
On a '74 CB550.
It doesn't look like a Zerk to me.
Thanks, -K

If it is stock I think 6mm is right. On my cb500 it was a slip fit zerk on the left side and a slip fit plug on the right.

Hmm, 6mm might be the right size, but it's not a Zerk.  At least not the kind I've seen before.
There's no zerky profile to it, it's just a flat walled nipple with a domed end.
How would a grease gun latch onto it?
Or do I need to buy a different nozzle (?) for my grease gun and just hold it on the nipple while greasing it?

well on my 77 750k there was this funny looking zerk at a right angle... so i replaced it with a standard american sized ZERK! that solved my problem of greese getting everywere!

Your right it is not a zerk but it functions the same. If you look close you will see the little ball in the end of one and the other is a solid plug according to the shop manual. There was at one time a special nipple for mini grease guns but unless the grease inside is rock solid you should be able to apply enough pressure with a regular gun holding it in place as you squeeze the trigger. Is messier than a zerk though.

Ah, thanks!
I was wondering why one side didn't have a hole.
Could this oddball fitting be replaced with a standard Zerk?

Yes I posted a couple of pics in the project section called "another cb500". The other day I pulled off the old grease nipple and plug with visegrips (they are slip fit not threaded) then drilled out the bolt ends a little less than a half inch deep on each end. I used a drill bit a little smaller than a quarter inch to have enough metal to thread it with a quarter inch tap. Once tapped I screwed in a couple of chrome zerks I picked up a lowes hardware they are a bit longer in thread length than the ones at checker auto was a pretty easy job, just keep the bit and tap straight because the bolt is already drilled through for grease.

Another note though you indicate you have a 550 it could be different setup altogether. I forgot to mention I used american tap and bit because I could not find a zerk with metric threads.

Sorry I also forgot to say that I cleaned all the old grease out of the bolt then did the taping and cleaned it out again so there would be no metal shavings inside that could plug the little grease passages and perhaps damage the bushings and felt washers.

Long time ago I posted in the "tricks&tips" about replacing the zerks, pictures included. If you do a search you may find it.
