Clutch problem - not much friction zone
« on: February 28, 2010, 07:33:42 AM »
On CB750K5 (1975)  no friction zone.  The clutch does not grab until nearly all the way out.  Should occur about half-way.  Does anyone know what that is a symptom of?  It does not slip once fully engaged.  It just affects ability to control at slow speeds and makes it harder to coordinate engine speed with clutch engagement from a stop.  More of an annoyance but before I tear it appart to see what needs replacing just wanted to get your ideas first.

Thank you

Have you done a full clutch adjustment?  Loosen both cable adjusters, adjust the lifter, then lower cable adjuster, then the adjuster at the lever.

I know what you mean jkot55. I have a 76 CB750 with 17000 miles with same situation. I have a 97 HD Wide Glide also and the clutch takes hold much sooner than on my Honda. Ive adjusted my clutch per this forum specs. and clutch still doesn't take hold until almost end of release, but bike shifts fine and clutch does not slip. Someone correct if Im wrong , but I think this is more a characteristic trait of most CB750's. If your clutch is not slipping and its adjusted correctly I think your fine. Its just a little awkward getting use to it.

Here's one link to the cure:

Another link is my book, in the "Reassembly" chapter, on how to fix the clutch for good! I have a lot of detail on it in there.

Guys, thanks for the tips.  mystic_1; I'll give that adjustment a try.  Since owning the bike I have not looked at the adjustment other then the lever on the handlebars.

Hondaman:  Just bought your book.  I figured I love my CB750 enough that it is well worth the investment.  I hope you sell a lot of these.  Thank you for taking the time to share.

Yup, definitely adjust the clutch before doing anything more drastic.
