I don't think I'm chopping this one up...
« on: February 28, 2010, 02:07:37 PM »
I've had a number of custom and chopped up CB750's, and I'm working on a couple more at the moment too.  But I've always felt my garage has been a little empty with one nice stocker.  Had a couple come and go that had potential.  The complete but rough diecast K0, the '70 that I got for free, etc.  But I've never found the motivation to take one and restore it.  Well now I don't think I have to.  Picked up this little beauty yesterday:

1976 CB750 in red.  I will make the third owner once I switch the title over.  Just over 17k on the clock, and gorgeous.  Now, that's not to say I don't have a few things to do.  It could use a new #2 pipe from some slight acid staining, and the tank is the wrong year (petcock's on the wrong side) and has a flaking decal, but she's pretty close to being just right.  Feels nice to have one that's totally original in the stable.  I don't think y'all have to worry about me getting the itch to modify this one.  Still has the yellow paint across the bolts on the frontend and stuff.  Rubber parts are just a soft as the day she rolled out of the showroom.  Not a spec of rust, etc.  I could go on, but I'll let my few hasty photos speak first.

Bike was bought from the original owner by a friend and fellow CB750 chopper a couple years back.  He changed the seat, which was the only non-original part, to one he picked up that was correct and really nice.  The tank needs to be fixed, along with the fake-chrome trim around the seat (anyone got a good tip on doing this?).  And it needs new tires.  What are the accepted new tires I can put on that look most original?  I almost can't believe I'm hearing myself be concerned about this  ;D  Oh, the times they are a changin'.

Someone here mentioned using car door edge moulding for the tank trim maybe it would work on the seat too.

Lancaster is where I picked it up yesterday.  Not sure of the previous wherabouts since I know the last guy only had her for a couple years.  Oh, and the odd stripe on the back of the tank in the third pic is a reflection of a shop-light.

So, where's the best place to get a tank painted?  The sidecovers are fine, and I don't want to touch them.  Just the tank/decals.

That's a K2 seat! Let me know if you decide to sell it, or maybe I could swap with you for a good K5/K6 seat?  ;D The K2 seat is hard to come by, mine's been gone for years. Would like to have it back. The low-rise side ribs and incut thigh scallops were the best seat ever, IMO.

Do I see the petcock on the left side? That's correct for late K5 and all K6 bikes. The late K5 petcock was the first with just one spigot, and a tee in the fule lines. The early K5 had the left side petcock, but with two spigots.

What a beauty!  :D

Very nice eye candy mate.
I think the thing I most like about motorcycling is the speed at which my brain must process information at to avoid the numb skulls who are eating pies, playing the ukulele, applying make-up etc in the comfort of their airconditioned armchairs as they make random attempts to kill me!!!!!!!

Just about as clean as it looks.  Some of the engine covers need polishing/clearcoating, as does the rear brake cover.  And the few discrepencys in years like the tank/seat need to be addressed, but yeah it's as nice as the pics would lead you to believe.

HondaMan, I would definitely swap this seat for a real nice K6 seat.  The seat itself is perfect (and I don't throw that around lightly) but as you can see the plastic-chrome trim around the bottom has dried out and cracked up.  Dunno what you can replace that with.  if you've got a really nice K6 seat lemme know.

I'll see about getting you some pictures of the K6 seat I have here somewhere, for your perusal. I don't mind the chrome thing: auto upholstery stores have something workable, or you can get Honda's trim for a mere $160 plus shipping...
