Clear Coat Question
« on: February 27, 2010, 07:58:00 AM »
I want a "semi gloss" finish on my tank and fender. Can I use this "SprayMax Urethane Aerosol Clear Coat"  or do I need to find a "semi gloss" clear coat?

I would guess that unless it is labeled as a semigloss than it would be gloss as is most "clear coat". Hopefully gas and alcohol (no not whiskey :D) resistant.

Calflash,

You have to use a 2-part clear if you want it to last.  You will also need to sand away to bare metal around the lip of the fuel filler cap, and where your petcock goes on.  If you don't, then fuel will get under the edge and lift the paint up.
The 2-part clear is the only clear in a can that will hold up to gasoline.  The others just plain and simple will not hold up.  It is only $20 for a can of the spraymax, which is money well spent the first time you dribble some gas on your new paint job.

Good luck and post some pics when done.

Gloss clearcoat + 1000 grit wet-dry sandpaper + a few hours of elbow grease = semigloss

You can probably even get away with using 600 grit.

Using even finer grit and polish can bring it back to glossy.

A friend of  mine  does it as an option on imported pianos for sale at his dad's store.

Watch out lots of 2k paints still get damaged by petrol, even when they have been oven cured

Will spraymax resist gas?
