My latest SOHC
« on: December 11, 2009, 05:17:11 AM »
I ended up getting another SOHC.

  1974 BMW 2002.
  2 Liter, 2 barrel, 4 speed with A/C.
Yeah, its a little rough around the edges, but very solid. I bought it about 2 weeks ago and drove it home (about 15 miles) with a slipping clutch (that was fun!!). I have since replaced the clutch and will be rebuilding the heater box in the next few day (also, guarenteed to be lots of fun).

I had a 1973 BMW 2002 in the 1980's and it was probably one of the best vehicles I have ever owned and when I saw this one and the price was very reasonable, I went for it.

Future plans for it are 14 inch "Bottlecap" wheels (stock BMW mags- I have them already), replace the leaking rear window seal (in the process), and making it into a 2002 turbo copy (fender flares, front and rear spoilers), changing the rear to disc brake and making a big brake kit for the front.

The Tan one is a 1974 that I have now, the Blue one is a pic of the 1973 BMW that I had in the 1980's.

I had a SOHC forum member come stay with me in Boston as he was picking up a BMW 2002 (not sure of the year but maybe also  a 74). It was February, there was lots of ice on the road and he parked on a hill overnight. Of course I had to give him a push in the morning to get it off the ice  :-\. He drove it back to Chicago that day on very scary looking tires!!! He was a huge enthusiast.

Have fun with it
cheers
Andy

Back in 71' -72', I worked for a VW dealership in Little Rock and they took in the BMW franchise while I was there. Now, those ARE some NICE vehicles alright! 8) Sure couldn't afford a NEW one back then. ::) I'd only been out of the Air Force about a year AND had gotten married, so money was scarce! :-\

That little BMW is in GOOD hands! ;)

The wheels were "American Racing" wheels I bought in the '80's. I ordered them and got 3 right away and the last one took about 3-4 months to get. They were uni-directional (the other side had the "fins" facing foward also). They had center caps that covered the lug portion, but they werent installed in the pic.  Sure would like to find another set, but I havent been able to (havent looked very hard either). The Bottlecaps will be fine for now.

I probably put 90- 100,000 miles on the one in the blue one in the years that I owned it. The only problem I had with it was the rear end went out (my fault, chirping 2nd all the time- hey,I was younger then).
It has a Weber 32/36 2 bbl. carb on it now, but I would like to find a set of dual Weber DCOE's for it in the future and possibly a 5 speed conversion. From what I have found out, the 5 speed is one of the best "conversions" to do for these cars.
They are really unique cars and have some unusual stuff on them. The distributor has a vacuume retard that retards the timing for idle (only for idle, as opposed to the typical vacuume advance) and the heater box have a valve in it that opens up to allow coolant into the heater core. Mine didnt have a heater valve when I bought it and THEN I found out that the heater valve can be found new for any where between $200 - $400 (a little peice of brass with an open/close valve in it). I joined the 2002faq site and found some one within an hour of me who had a complete heater box (with valve) for $60(he had the bottlecap wheels also). The valve needs to be rebuilt (2 50cent O-rings) and I'll probably finish up the heater box today. I've been finding that alot of the "issues" that this car has is from corroded electrical contact no longer making contact. A quick cleaning and di-electric grease has been fixing most of these issues.

The 73 was the last of the "Roundies" and the 74 was the first of the "Squaries". They are "named" after the tail lights that they have in them.

"Squaries" pictured below. The blue pic above semi-shows the "Roundies"

I've putzed with the BMW a little.

I got the "bottlecap" BMW wheels mounted with 185/60X14 tires.

The aftermarket Weber 2 bbl carb (You call THAT a carb?) has been replaced with a set of stock dual Solex 40PHH side drafts (Now THATS a carb!! -originally for the 2002 Ti model). There's a world of different in performance between the 2 different set ups.

I've also added an oil cooler set up.

I've gotten some Mallory ignition stuff to add to it (Coil, Super CD box) and will be installing them in the near future.
