U-bends, where to purchase
« on: March 01, 2010, 06:52:38 AM »
This one is for the fabricators out there.

I'm looking for a good place to purchase U-bends for exhaust. I'm curious as to how spendy it would get for me to make some new headers as my exhaust system is pretty questionable. I don't want a MAC. I kind of want a high scrambler style exhaust.

I'm just brainstorming and was curious, not necessarily committing to anything.

JC Whitney used to sell mandrel bent tubing with various bends as well. Don't recall if they offered SS or not.

JC Whitney has a few options from the looks.

So, who knows the OD of the 550 exhaust pipes? It's not something I've ever even checked. EDIT: Got it!

Thanks guys, I didn't even really think to check JC... Looks like they don't have anything small enough though. Time to get searching.

Edit 2: 1-1/4" OD from what I found searching the forums, so far this is what I've found http://www.headersbyed.com/_manbend.htm

Columbia River at mandrel-bends.com they have collectors, cones, donuts, pipe, mild steel and stainless.

Step headers are big in racing right now. You just slip fit into the next bigger size tube. There is a software program called pipemax it's not too expensive, it allows you to determine optimum diamater and length for primaries, collectors etc.

almost any decent muffler shop should bend it for you for next to dirt, just have all your ducks in a row. as long as they dont have to think or add much effort it shouldnt cost much at all. some of them will even sell you the ss pipe...

ummm maybe where you are in the States, I would tend to believe it's possible.
But in Canada,  I brought  a fully mocked up version to a well known muffler shop and all they had to do was knock of my prototype in regular steel and they wanted $1000.

well there is a hell of a lot more work involved in copying a mock up, especially if you want them to assemble it too. im talking about banging out a couple of basic bends, not fab a complete header. mine was simple, 4 bends, 2 90s and 2 70 something. just to replace two #$%*ed up pipes on a i-6 header. i think he charged me $25. took all of 15 mins.

There's a difference between mandrel bends and what your local exhaust shop can do.
Take care,

The original inquiry was pertaining to have a "scrambler type" exhaust made so I beg to differ there is a hell of alot more work in fabing a system from scratch than handing over a complete mock up that the shop can take apart and duplicate.

si,si they were not mandrel bends.

i thought the original inquiry was for a couple of u bends?

Not only are a lot of EX shops, not manderel equipped, their radius is far too big for a lot of bike headers.

You need pretty tight radii for  tucked in headers or high pipes that do not look like engine guards...

I think on mine od to od on the 180 is like  6 inches or so.. that is what you need for a high pipe.. for 1 & 4 cylinders..

I kind of want a high scrambler style exhaust.

I was kinda thinking about that too, never see any 750's with high or scrambler style pipes

Coneeng doesn't have anything smaller than 1-1/2" OD. I'm pretty sure it's 1-1/4" on the 550s.

Anyway, I was thinking something similar to Bill's post here: http://forums.sohc4.net/index.php?topic=56219.msg606284#msg606284

I got $100.00 worth of various bends from these people, will probably be enough for 3 systems

I checked my pipe its 1 3/8 tubing on what looks like a 3 inch radius giving the outer bend measurement of 7 3/8 on a 180.

I think on the turbo pipe tey use small tubes to increase velocity, on a NA bike, I think it helps torque.

Anyway, this goes from #1 to outside of collector, neatly fits above dyno cover..

I like SPD exhaust, large inventory and just about anything you would need to build a (an) Exhaust system.
