Any CB550 F2 experts around here??
« on: January 14, 2006, 11:34:19 AM »
Hi guys. I have a 1977 CB550 F2 and I'm in the process of cleaning it up as can be seen on my website here....

http://www.mcqart.com/550four/index.htm

I have bought a brand new Motad replacement exhaust system but what I would REALLY like to do, is to refit the regular frontpipes that came with the machine, but the silencer is shot.

The silencer fitted was a "Dunstall Decibel" and I just can find one anywhere. Having looked at it carefully, I can see that all I really need (maybe) is something similar with a 55mm diameter end piece to fit onto those lovely frontpipes.

Anyone any ideas?

Nice silencer - did you consider just having that hole repaired and the whole thing rechromed?

I'm from Bolton in the UK Bryan.

Never really thought of repair & rechrome. Hmmmmm.

Mufflershop? I guess that's American huh? No use to me here. Thanks anyway.

Dave, I couldn't agree more with you. I have a GREAT BIG soft spot for the 400/4 and fully intend to sell the CB550 as soon as she's completed. I think she's gonna look mighty fine when I roll her out of the garage, but you know what they say....

Look forward to seeing some pix Dave.  The biggest change to this CB550 is the engine. It was a great engine mechanically, but it looked like a tramp's vest, so its nice to see a shine on it at last.

I fitted the NOS rev-counter tonight and it looks just fabulous! The NOS speedo should arrive tomorrow and I can't wait to see them side by side like they did in the showroom nearly 30 years ago  :)

hey biffta thought you was in the US, your local time shows as EST

I don’t know how to set the clock thing (EST)…….seems to show the right time on the PC, I'm a Brit with a 400F in the making Mal that paint job on the tank works I like it ....that 550 looks fine MD sell it and get a 400 you know it makes sense . ;D

Dave

to set clock go to your Profile, select 'Look & Layout Preferences' adjust Time offset +5
The tank & side panels were already done when I bought it, the top half of engine is in boxes at moment. As you probably remember I am after an exhaust, the only thing missing.

Ok Dave, no didn't get the Motad reject off Ebay, could only afford to go to £100.
Is that Mansfield Notts? I work around there at moment, probably know the shop you mean on the Chesterfield Road?

FYI, the color of those faces are unique to 1976 models.

You're absolutely right Drool, but I couldn't resist the opportunity to replace those ill-looking clocks with these shiny new ones. I have a 1976 Honda UK brochure and the green clocks are featured in that too. Of course, in 77 with the introduction of the F2, they moved on to the dark blue clocks. If ever I find a NOS set of those, I'll buy them and sell these green ones to someone rebuilding an F1.

There is something else that is "different" about the gauges, but nobody has noticed it yet.  ::)

With the old clocks BTW, I was thinking of stripping them down and fitting a set of those black CAFE RACER decals from Carpy...

You mean the 750 tach with the low redline?

I did that same thing on my 74 CB550 by accident.  For years I wondered why the engine couldn't get close to redline.  750 tachs use a different multiplier.  Did you find a different drive gear off the cam?  Or, and inline ratio changer?

I simply switched back to a 550 tach.

Absolutely spot-on!  :D

No, I haven't changed the drive gear and don't intend fitting any sort of inline ratio changer.

Just be aware that 750 tach readings on a 550 are way lower than actual revs.
