cl360 timing chain replacement
« on: January 14, 2006, 02:17:04 PM »
Hi,

I have a acquired a cl360 for $50 in fairly decent shape for a bike that appears to have sat for years. I have pulled the motor and found that the timing chain has a serious kink in it. Does anyone know if there is a way to replace the chain without splitting the case?

thanks,
john in KY

I'm afraid not. In the shop manual, Honda specifically instructs mechanics not to cut the old chain to remove it nor rivet a new one together. Sorry to be the bearer of bad news.... :(

What year is it? There was a cam chain tensioner update after the '74 model year. I know it applied to the CB360T... Not sure if it includes the CL as well.

there was a serious problem with the cam chain tensioners on these bikes, and the result is that a great number of them ended up with the cam chain wearing straight through the case. in my opinion, they went downhill from the cb/cl 350 when they made the 360 model. while you're in there, make sure to change that tensioner.

Whist Honda said dont do it, i did a few and never had a problem BUT as you probably have the top end off anyway and gasket sets for that are always full sets now considering the time its been stood a full strip and clean out is probably called for and not much more time

thanks for the help guys. I think it makes sense just to take another day or so, split the case, and give the bottom end a good once over. I'll also inspect that chain tensioner. Does anyone know if that part is still available?

CMS has all the parts you need for the cam chain tensioner retrofit. I am going through this on my CB360T.

Send a Private Message to Bill Vaughn. He has a PDF copy of the tensioner refit manual and the part numbers.

Part numbers for the updated parts appear below:

Slipper/Tensioner - 14520-369-010
Holder - 14530-369-020
Damper A - 14565-369-010
Damper B - 14567-369-000 (this is the original style part, but worth replacing while you're in there.

I attempted to attach the factory manual supplement that details the update, but the file is too large for this site now.  If you need it, send me a private message with your email address and I'll forward it to you.
