When posting VIN's why eliminate the last couple of digits?
« on: March 10, 2010, 12:43:55 PM »
Just curious about this.  I realize you can find someones name by the VIN but it's not hard to get anyones name here.  And if you did it's not like stealing someones indentity.  To steal the bike maybe?  What good would it do to steal a bike that has a VIN all over the internet?  Everyone would know who's it is.  Like I said, just curious.

i think its paranoid thinking... it the bikes only ID and even if nothing could happen why risk it... there are diabolical people out there who sit around and look for ways to rip people off... i would figure this way, less ammo is provided for them to attack u

In some states, mine being one of them, I can potentially walk into the DMV, with a "bill of sale" with the VIN # and some $$ and transfer a cycle into my name. I can get a title too if I fill out the paperwork and pay some more $$. I wouldn't, but I could, especially if I knew the owners name as well.  ::) Then I could claim the bike as stolen by the PO and "take it back". Very lax here on that stuff. Most states make you show them the bike and verify it all before putting through the paperwork. Not ours.

Interesting.  So (in your state) two people could end up with a title on the same bike?  I wouldn't think it would be too hard to prove which one is legit.

So, with that, if someone buys a bike with no title, gets a title and then down the line the PO finds his title and tries to claim the bike, which one is ligit? It's only a paper. Possession is a biggie in that case I think. I'm not saying it's right or that I'd do it. I do worry though since this state is so lax. It makes life easy to get your bike titled and registered but it also opens it up for people to take advantage too.

same thing in maine after 20 years all you need is a bill of sale. so if you have the vin and the guys name you can make up a bill of sale sign his name and its your and you can legally reg it and everything... you probally would get caught but im just saying it would be easy.

In Spain, with a plate number you can get the name and address of the vehicle owner.

I for one don't need anybody to know where my vehicles can be found unless I tell him so.

If you  got the serial number, you could get bogus reggie.

If the collector has lots of bikes, often they are in storage or storage units.

If someone picked up said bike at the storage unit or place of storage, by whatever illegal means.. They are now driving away with a bike with papers..

Now it is a simple matter to  take it to another state, or even overseas, transfer it into another name.. now it gets much harder to recover...
If there is a market for Rodans Rembrandts, etc that are hot and you cant take out in public.. then there surely is people that would be happy to "own" scarce motorcycles.. Brough, 36 EL's, Vincents, Boardtrackers, Indians, even early Honda fours..

Real 36 EL.. 70-100k.....hot one you can only show your buddies. maybe 20 K.. or it gets parted.. and they toss the cases..

That is the problem, as I have been brought to understand, through the AMCA type of guys..

I agree Mark,
Here in Minnesota it is not hard to get a new title for a bike IF (and they check) the current owner ia not using the bike anymore and you have a bill of sale etc. But even though we all like to pick on the DMV they do a really good job on checking. Like you said if some one tried in MN to get a title for YOUR bike the state wouldn't allow it as you have current title and registration all the proof you need. IF the title gets over 10-15 years with no activity (recent tabs etc) The state makes it pretty easy to get a new one but they still CHECK it out.

I like seeing serial numbers as I like comparing build dates and seeing changes based on those numbers. But there are bad guys screwing some one every day...

Just make sure your bike is titled and the tabs or collector plate is paid for!!!
