Quick question anyone can answer but me
« on: February 11, 2006, 12:31:07 PM »
I discovered the carb problem with my CB 650, there is some sort of screw missing.  I think it is brass, it is on the very bottom of the carb on the engine side, it is housed in the center of the U shape of the float bowl.

Can you tell me what this is and where can get one?

Thanks
Sol

You could try PartsFish.  You have to make an account but it costs nothing; It allows you to view parts diagrams and order parts. You may find what you are looking for there. http://www.powersportspro.com/partsfish/login.asp

Called a local parts place, he said it was the idle mixture screw, I guess thats why it wouldnt idle and was severely lean.

If it's at the bottom of the float bowl it isn't the idle mixture screw, it's the drain plug like KB02 said.

From his decription it sounds exacltly like the idle mixture screw (bottom of carb body, engine side, nestled in the U of the float bowl) His 80 most likely has the pumper carbs similar to the 77/78 750s. These have the U shaped float bowls, and idle mix screws on the engine side that control the bleed of fuel rather than air.

What do you mean by "pumper carbs"?

Yep, it's the pilot jet.  Won't run without 'em.

I think by "pumper" he means that the carbs have an accelerator pump.  Yep, the 650 carbs have an accelerator pump in the #2 carb, and it's connected to each carb for a pump of fuel when you hit the gas.

In older carbs without the pump, there a bit of lag when you hit the throttle because at first you get more air than fuel, then as the engine pulls vacuum you get more fuel.

If the dealer gives you pilots with "smog caps", you might as well leave them off.

out,

Zeke

Hey Wired!  Don't know if it'll fit, but I've got an old one from one of the carbs on my 77 750F.  If you want, I'll mail you one.  You'll need an o-ring for it also, I believe.  A Keyster carb kit should have both the air screw and o-rings.

Hey, thanks for the offer, but I'll just pick one up at the local parts place.  Where can I get ahold of one of those rebuild kits?  The carbs are in great condidtion except for that little omission, it was in great running condition except for that carb when I took it down.

I am in the midst of doing a headlight to taillight fixit tour.  Whoever rebuilt the carbs last did a good job on them, but not a good job on getting them back into the bike, they were half out of the manifold rubbers, and one or more of the airbox boots was kinked exposing number 3 to unfiltered air.  Also the boot between the two airboxes was over tightened so it turned the oval shaped hole into a peanut shaped hole allowing unfilered air in the sides.  The carbs were relatively unfunked leading me to believe that it was not rebuilt too long ago.  I ordered a new airbox from ebay and I'll be on the road in a few weeks, after all the other parts come in.
