cb750 turn signals
« on: February 27, 2010, 01:49:33 PM »
Guys, all four of my turn signals work, but they seem weak and they seem to flicker more than they flash. I don't know much about wiring. Could it be because it's a 1973? Can this
be fixed? Would like to have easy-to-see signals. Thanks for any suggestions.

Is your battery and charging system up to snuff ?.Do they act up under low rpm and then fine at higher rpm? Do you see any type of corrosion on the connectors?

I got a set of used stock indicator/blinkers for my bike and it the excitement to install them I didn't bother taking the lenses off to check out the connections and condition of everything on the inside. I plugged them in mounted them and turned on the bike flipped the turn signal switch and got about a flash every 30 seconds... hmmmm.... did I plug them in incorrectly? Nope. Was my battery low? Nope. It was driving me nuts, what could be wrong? Took the lenses off and one of the wires was loose and corroded. A quick wire brush and tightening later, perfect. The lesson, make sure your wires are clean and your connections tight.

The originals blinkers where thermal type, meaning they had to heat up to blink that and 30 odd some years old caused them to blink slowly. Get a new electronic type from you auto store.

Take the 2 connections off the flasher "can" and hook them together with a bit of wire.
Switch the signals on each way and see if the lights look OK.
If there are wiring issues, this will show them up.
If all looks good, get a new flasher module.

Thanks, where is the flasher can located? I have been looking for it. I took all four lights apart and cleaned all the corrosion I found and they are a little better but still flash slowly and not as strong as I think they should be.

It's under the left hand side cover, at the top right of the battery box. It's a small, about 1" tall cylinder attached to the battery box by a piece of rubber. My bike is in boxes right now, but here's a photo of the flasher replay I installed:

OK, I ordered the new flasher unit as advised, but now I can't find the original flasher on my bike. I am attaching a pic with my side cover removed.

As far as I can tell, it SHOULD be where the red circle is...

OK, where the red circle is, right behind that tab that the side cover plugs into, there is a little rectangular box with two wires going into it. I thought the flasher would have three wires going into it. The box is attached to the frame at its top, so I can't pull it out into view.

It's usually attached to the battery box with a rubber "hoop"... I suppose you could just unplug the two terminals and attach them to your new relay for the time being just to get it going. I don't remember it being specific as far as which wire goes to which terminal on the relay.

Yeah, the original flasher relay is rectangular. Of course be sure to document which wires you pulled from where in case for some reason that isn't the relay... but I can't think of what else that could possibly be.
