Installing Cam and Sprocket
« on: April 14, 2005, 04:08:30 PM »
I just replaced the head gasket on my 78 CB750K and putting everything back together.  For some reason the cam chain is too short now to put it over the cam sprocket.  While I had the head off I had the cam chain suspended from a bungee cord.  Now the cam chain is too tight to slip over the cam sprocket!   Any suggestions?

Is the tensioner let all the way out? Just a guess.  :-\

The tensioner is off the engine, so there's no tension on the cam chain.

Greets,
It is possible that there might be some slack links at the bottom of the crank sprocket if the chain slackened while the cam was removed. This will effectively shorten the chain at the cam sprocket. Apply light tension to the cam chain while slowly rotating the crank. This should remove any slack links from the bottom of the crank sprocket, then try again.

Make sure you slide the sprocket to the side off it's mount to obtain slack, then wrap the chain around the sprocket.  You should now be able to slide the sprocket back onto the mount.
