people wonder why i refuse to get on an airplane

"That's what you get, guys, when the kids are out of school." oh good lord, these people are supposedly responsible for their part of air safety

http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/35683779/ns/travel-news/?GT1=43001

NEW YORK - A child apparently directed pilots last month from the air traffic control center at John F. Kennedy Airport, one of the nation's busiest airports, according to audio clips. The Federal Aviation Administration said Wednesday that it was investigating.

"Pending the outcome of our investigation, the employees involved in this incident are not controlling air traffic," the FAA said in a statement. "This behavior is not acceptable and does not demonstrate the kind of professionalism expected from all FAA employees." The agency declined to comment beyond the statement.

Recordings from mid-February — during a weeklong winter break for many New York schoolchildren — were posted last month on a Web site for air traffic control-listening aficionados.
Story continues below ↓advertisement | your ad here

The child can be heard on the tape making five transmissions to pilots preparing for takeoff.

In one exchange, the child can be heard saying, "JetBlue 171 contact departure." The pilot responds: "Over to departure JetBlue 171, awesome job."

The child appears to be under an adult's supervision, because a male voice then comes on and says with a laugh, "That's what you get, guys, when the kids are out of school."

In another exchange, the youngster clears another plane for takeoff, and says, "Adios, amigo." The pilot responds in kind.

The FAA said the control tower is a highly secure area for air traffic controllers, supervisory staff and airport employees with a need to be there. FAA spokesman Jim Peters said children of the tower's employees are allowed to visit but would need to get approval from the FAA first.

The union representing air traffic controllers condemned the workers' behavior.

"It is not indicative of the highest professional standards that controllers set for themselves and exceed each and everyday in the advancement of aviation safety," the National Air Traffic Controllers Association said in a statement.

First, I agree with Tramp.  Very professional.  But have any of you listened to the adults doing the same job?  At times it gets quite familiar.  So my first opinion stands.  I have heard the controllers way less professional.  I think someone needs a hot soak and relax the sphincter.

Amen. Not like the controller is off taking a lunch letting the kid cover for him.

I have mixed reactions to this whole thing.  First, I think that it's great that the kids got to see what Mom and Dad do for a living, but they shouldn't have been allowed to be on the radio no matter how close the parent was.  I'm a machinist by trade, and I wouldn't allow my kid anywhere near a running machine or let them "give it a try".  There are limits to some things.
I heard that the FAA was all over the prople involved, threatening legal action.  I think that's going too far, since it became so "public", they (the officials) probably feel that they would be judged themselves as incompetent if they didn't prosecute.
The whole thing was blown out of proportion.

Well the media is generally horribly and terribly wrong about most matters concerning aviation.

The statement above tells me at least one of the 5 supposed airplanes waiting for take off was already airborne.

Dirty little secret of FAA air traffic control? Folks gotta get trained somewhere.

Trainees have a minimum time they must spend actually directing traffic.

Some of the trainees scare me more than the kid.

So a kid issued a clearance and made a radio transmission while an adult stood behind monitoring and telling him what to say.

Would be the about the same as a kid ordering up "Full speed" over the voice box on an aircraft carrier.

It doesn't mean he's driving the Big Boat.

i drive a skip bin truck and no kids/wifes/dogs are allowed,,its only a small family company with 6 trucks,,a few months ago a driver was lifting a bin with a 4 tonne(small) 4 year old mitsubishi canter truck, these only have a tail shaft drum parking brake!,with underdash pull handle,it was a long steep driveway and the truck ran away(outside hydraulic controls),it ran down the driveway,,across the street and smashed into a house across the way, bringing down the garage front wall,,the passenger front side of the truck was nearly pressed against the rear of the seat,,,thats why no kids/wifes/or dogs.

Actually I'd think that Fuzzy probably wouldn't get past the ticket counter with his kilt, thigh boots and cat on a leash? ;D
I was feeling sorry for myself because I couldn't afford new bike boots, until I met a man with no legs.

So I said, "Hey mate, you haven't got any bike boots you don't need, do you?"

Just to further your fear. I know personally a few people that work at our largest airplane builder in the country. Who get high on the way to work everyday. After a two year process to get a job. And a final drug test when hired. They drank some #$%* the night before and past the test!  Every time a plane crashes that's what I think about, is stoned factory workers not giving a crap about what they are doing at work. grrrrrrrrrr

Being a sober machinist, who coincidentally makes aircraft parts, I would let my kid (if I had one) "give it a shot" with one of the machines. And I would be watching like a hawk, with my mitt on the red mushroom the whole time. Kids can't be much worse than some of the jackwads in the world that do this stuff every day. Probably better, as at least the kid is a little nervous and is paying attention to what they are being told to do.

Yes, people tend to forget the primary purpose of the "news" media.

While it started out for the purpose of informing, that didn't sell advertising spots.  So, it was changed to a news show, which may have facts in it carefully arranged to evoke an emotional response from the audience.
Fear, in particular, is highly desirable to instill in the audience as it gets almost the same attention as sex.  Both, these topics have advertisers salivating over increased audience attention.

Frankly, I think Bucky is just looking for some reinforcement of his decision to fear airplanes.  This particular example, is a pretty feeble one, as I am certain that the child was under adult supervision, at least.  I just can't imagine any controller would put their job at risk by purposefully instigating a truly unsafe situation.  They are all human and therefore can make mistakes.  But, you are more likely to fall down stairs and break your noggin than have a child in air traffic control actually cause an air incident.  Finally, it is the pilot that is ultimately responsible for the aircraft's safe operation.  It is totally ludicrous to expect that the pilot/crew would take unsafe direction from a child's voice on the radio.

I used to work at orlando fla's bussiest airport and let me tell u some of the crap that the FAA pulls there is just irratating, to get to the tower is to easy, I myself am afraid to fly my motto has always been "if God wanted me to fly he would have personaly given me my own set of wings" After working at the airport for 2 years I will never ever fly. Heck we even had a "suicide" happen in garage With a gun, tell what these employee's who were suppose to be patroling the garage were doing that night. a couple found the woman dead in her car when they got back from vacation, as they were parked next to hers and could clearly see the blood. Come on! I worked for the parking garage at the end where u cash out and u do not have to have a sercuities licence for that now how scary is that! I used to do that on midnights when i started way back and was 5 months pregnate and could not keep my eye's open and that's when i switched postions for the saftey of the customers and myself, u never know what could happen at night in a garage all by yourelf with no way to defend yourself. I'm with buckey on this one guys after years of work at airport and seeing what i seen, granted it was out of porportion the employee should have gotten permission first and made the kid stay away from radio, regaurless because those are lives at stake on those planes.

Yeah...the parking garage is not exactly a secure part of an Airport.

Its not considered "secure" by the FAA or TSA.....hell often times parking at the mall is better and more secure.

Whats the parking garage have to do with some fear of flying?

We don't keep the airplanes in there  ;)

Sometimes you just have to trust those in power.
Really, do you go around living in fear all the time?
THAT is what I am afraid of. ???

If you are always afraid, then the Patriot Act

LOL I know that silly he he,but the security then when i was working there was terriable, any airport employee could just go to any terminal they liked without having to go thru security, and some don't do back round checks and such, so there lyed a big problem, that i had an issue with anyway, what if an employee had a gun and "planned to meet up with a terriost boarding a plane. see there lyies the problem i had and still have not to sure about the security now been gone for a bit but not gone after sept 11th.
