question about prednisone
« on: March 03, 2010, 02:26:50 PM »
is this stuff supposed to increase appetite a whole hell of alot?  Hamish is getting it to try and slow the tumor growth and he's all of a sudden just eating 24/7 it seems. he seems to be alot less arthritic too.

I don't know about appetite, but it does tend to allow for weight gain in humans.

I was on Prednisone for 12 months after i had my transplant and it does make you bloat a bit, some people get what is called "moon face" syndrome where their face puffs up, especially the cheeks. I didn't puff up much myself because i am quite small but with some people it is very obvious..

Don't know about appetite, but I would like to caution you to follow the directions when coming off of it.  If you don't decrease slowly coming off, it can throw you for a loop - heart rate and such.

Before my dose was reduced, I could not figure out how to get more food in faster.  I finally gopt onto rice cakes, but 5 packages of rice cakes a day still has calories- especially when smothered in "stuff".
My puffy face didn't come right away- but it came.
Hopefully the little guy's dose will decrease after a while?

It can actually kill you if you stop taking it instantly as prednisone is made by the body, when taking it artificially, the body stops production, so if you have been taking it for a while then just all of a sudden stop it can be fatal.

he gets 2 doses a day for the first week, then 1 a day. he'll not come off of it ever. the prednisone is being used to try to slow the growth of the tumor in his abdomen, trying to give him a little more pain free time until he has to be put down.

It solved my lung problem but I could only take it for a while.

Great for the arthritis, bad for the weight/eating.

It also has a side effect of bringing on diabetes in individuals that are predisposed to the illness. I think you can guess how I know this. It is not a nice condition to be in, I think I know where every restroom in the county is just in case and plan all my outings accordingly. LOL
