Honda CB550 just a couple questions
« on: March 03, 2010, 04:54:07 PM »
So, I don't have my title yet but I've started messing with my 550. It only runs on #3 and #4 for starters, but it also pisses gas out of #1, #2, and #3's carbs. I'm pretty sure the floats or the needles are stuck. No big deal. I didn't have a whole lot of time to go into it today, but that's what I've got so far. I was under the impression that cylinders #1 and #3 were paired together, and #2 and #4 were paired together. I haven't gotten a manual for it yet but will be doing that soon. Anyone got any suggestions as to how to fix any of my problems? Thanks.

#1 and #4 use one set of points and one ignition coil.
#2 and #3 use the other set of points and ignition coil.

The gas flowing from your overflow tubes is a result of your needle valves not closing fully.  This can be caused by a stuck float, a damaged needle / seat pair, or debris between the needle and seat.  My bet is that the floats don't move freely in the bowls.  They are probably stuck to the bottom.  The remedy is to remove the fuel bowls from each carb and clean them thoroughly.  If you only want to mess with this once and be done with it - go ahead and remove the entire carb assembly and clean all internal parts very thoroughly.  If any rubber parts are old and hard, buy a rebuild kit for each carb.

Have fun,

Kenolds.

I have a 75 CB550K as well. I've had one or more carbs pouring gas since I've owned it. I've cleaned, dipped, and done everything I can possible think of to fix the problem. I finally brok down and ordered 4 new carb rebuild kits which are $12 each:

If you do want to try and fix your carbs first what I would recommend you get four sandwich bags and keep parts for each carb in specific bags. If you mix and match the float needles and seats then you have a good chance of them leaking.

If you want to work on your engine fill the carbs up until the start to overflow then turn the fuel off. Your carbs will have enough gas to run for a few minutes. Try switching #2 and #3 plug wires and switching #1 and #4 plug wires. If this doesn't help try switching the spark plugs. If this doesn't work then you most likely have a fuel related issue.
