Cafe exhaust question: 4-into-4 versus 4-into-1
« on: January 14, 2006, 10:05:41 PM »
I'm planning my Cafe Racer and I know the big thing to put on a Cafe is a nice set of 4-into-1s.  However, I have REALLY become enamored with the look of the matte black 4-into-4 megaphones of the CR750 and other period racers.

Are there any real performace differences with say, a Yoshimura 4-into-1 versus the CR-style 4-into-4s?  Is the 4-into-1 really that much better that people seem to totally forsake the 4-into-4?

I think a Cafe with the four black megaphones would look REALLY cool, especially from the rear, and would be a bit of a departure from the "norm". Plus, it would be what I would want, and isn't that part of the point of a Cafe; built to the owner's taste?

Unless there is an incredible performance reason not to do it, I think I shall.

4 into 4 gives performance throughout the range, 4 into 1 gives good top end.
This was disscused two weeks ago on a similar thread.

Solved and answered all in the one post............and well put...

Performance issues can be argued till the cows come home regarding exhausts and the myriad comparisons of different systems, and tuning methods employed together with after market modifications to say the least..

As you state, the look you are creating is unique to your style...... go for it......... if it doesn't work for you do something different,
you just may create a new hybrid cafe/street/rider/scrambler/bopper/chopper or whatever, it will be yours.

beauty is in the eye of the beholder...., but a greater sounding board you cannot get from members of this forum. :) :)

...A bonnet.

But getting back to the topic, if one has a good set of 4 into 4's at hand, use them!  Far more exotic than the common aftermarket 4 into 1's.

Few of us pound the horse power out of these bikes on the track anyway, go for the looks.

You have to consider the weight also.

Thanks for the input!

I saw this replica "race bike" built from a custom shop in the UK and it really inspired me.

http://www.discovolantemoto.co.uk/viewpart.do?id=24

Ignore the whole bike, just look at the exhuast.  Let the animated GIF load and it shows different views of the bike.  I like the low, tapered megaphone-look of the exhaust and how the upper set is lightly staggered to the outside.  While theirs looks to be straight-through, I'd probably do similar design glass-packs for a little backpressure for the low-end and midrange.

I wonder what a muffler shop would charge to do a custom set or two....

saw this machine at Stafford Classic Bike Show at the end of last year, it really is a work of art, better than the photo could ever show, pity they had to use a Yamaha engine though.

Agreed 100% on the Yam engine. :(

I do like the exhaust though.

There is a company in the UK that make the RC type replica 4-4 pipes, I am busy with a RC171/2 350 replica and will use one of there pipes.

Yes I also think the 4-4 design looks great.

It's a nightmare, honestly.

I ordered a set of down pipes and megaphones for our CR750.

The down pipes was spot on, all neatly terminating under the motor.

The megas on the other hand arrived straight, hence, no room to fit a rear wheel.

Work it out for yourself, Andynzl has the same problem at the moment, take a look on his site.

Good luck.

Ditto on the Swarbrick megs. I've got a set that I plan on using on the naked Rickman CR and they're gonna take a chunk of work to fit. The Swarbricks are cool, but they're far from a bolt-on exhaust. I think they might make a muffled version, but I'm gonna have to fit some kind of silencers inside the open megs for my use. So yeah, it's kinda, sorta a nightmare job but, hey, some of us are "too old to rock 'n roll and too young to die" and it keeps us out of the bars. Usually.  ;D
