550 Front wheel bearing retainer: I'm stuck.
« on: March 06, 2010, 07:42:31 AM »
I ran into problems with the front wheel. I have new bearings to install, but I can't get the retainer out. I've read tons of threads on how to do it, but I can't seem to get it loose. I drilled out the two punched spots about 1/4" deep with a 1/8" drill bit, then I made a tool to turn the retainer.

But the retainer isn't budging at all, I'm just chewing it up and ruining the screws on the tool. Suggestions?

Soak it with a lot of pb blaster, it took me 2 days of working it back and forth before I got mine off. A deadblow hammer and punch got it to move at first then the makeshift tool to get it to go back and forth a little more off each time. The metal is very soft and the threads bind very easy. Keep at it and it will eventually come off, a punch to get it to move a little at this point will not damage it to much more than it already is. I am sure others will offer up solutions so take your time.

Don't forget that the rear retainer is reverse threaded.

EDIT:  Ops! just realized the subject says FRONT wheel bearing.  Never Mind!

I just changes my front.  Honda will sell you a replacement retainer ring if you find the original is too buggered to reuse.  You'll want a new dust seal on the retainer side and an oring on the speedo side anyway.

Can I have a motorcycle when I get old enough?
If you take care of it.
What do you have to do?
Lot’s of things. You’ve been watching me.
Will you show me all of them?
Sure.
Is it hard?
Not if you have the right attitudes. It’s having the right attitudes that’s hard.

Yeah, no matter what you may as well order a replacement ring now....

I had to (carefully!) use a chisel to remove the ring from rear hub of my 750.
Tap tap tap tap....

I was having the same problem untill I used a slightly larger drill bit and drilled the punch marks a little deeper.  Once I did that the damn thing almost spun out by hand....  It was frustrating at first.

Well, I went ahead and cut it out. I'm looking for a new one, but most places want $6 to ship an $8 part that weighs like 4 ounces. If I could find someplace that had #125 jets for a CB750 also, I'd order both right now. Otherwise I'm good as far as parts go.
