Time for an Economy Run ??
« on: March 13, 2010, 10:14:40 PM »
An old favorite, usually run over a predetermined course..

I was thinking, maybe we should have a competition.. see who can get the best gas mileage.. on a CB 750.. & 500-4 and 350/400 four..

 Anyone interested??
I will have to make a speedo drive, I think..

Are you thinking of something like the Craig Vetter economy runs up and down highway 1?

Like you mean, drain the tank, put in a certain specified amount (1 gallon US=3.785 Litres) set the trip metre then run till the bike stops. :D
I'm up for a 650 comparison test, have to state what sort of riding though, like no hills, do we do a motorway or urban streets etc.
I think the thing I most like about motorcycling is the speed at which my brain must process information at to avoid the numb skulls who are eating pies, playing the ukulele, applying make-up etc in the comfort of their airconditioned armchairs as they make random attempts to kill me!!!!!!!

I don't have a speedo, much less an odo, but my best MPG recorded was using the odo's of the guys riding with me. 63 mpg @ steady speed of 55MPH. 836, Webers.

I was thinking we could  start by, just reporting our own, to see who is getting pretty good numbers..

Then if it was possible to get a few of the bikes together, we could run em off together..

There is this certain 55 mile straight stretch, starting right beside the Salt Flats in Utah..

Could actually get interesting if we started tweaking to get max  mileage..

Hmm. I think I was on the stretch of road in Utah you're talking about, on the return trip from Colorado Springs. Looong time ago.

So you're thinking a 110 mile run?  Sounds interesting.

Would there be a speed requirement or can the rider go whatever speed they think will get the best mileage?

If I recall correctly, Vetter's run factored in speed vs distance. Also, highway 1 was a twisty, 2 lane road, and if you were to push the limits much above 45MPH, in certain places, you stood a good chance of sailing off over a 100 foot drop into the Pacific.

When shell used to have the economy run for cars Studebaker got a PO box in the post office where the route was mailed from and paid a postal worker cancel the stamp and to hand over the route as soon as it was delivered. That gave them time to pre-run the route and time the traffic lights determine what lane to be in etc,  they also changed the owners manual to allow more air in the tires if carrying the exact amount of ballast required by the rules. very edgy. they won most of the time. :o

I'm in. CB400f riding for Team Airbox (though if someone wants to ride Project Freebike in all its velocity-stacked glory, it will be ready in a month or so). I say we start at the Chevron on Arguello and Geary in SF (closest gas to the GG Bridge) and ride up HWY 1. In order for the test to be as meaningful as possible, I say we ride like we usually ride: as fast as the turns and traffic allow. The more participants we have, the better our numbers will compensate for variances in riding style.

Second weekend in May?
I'll buy the first round of oysters at Hog Island.

Why cop out due to speedo issues? This is the day and age of the mighty GPS unit, keep track of how far, and how fast. And it's not like a couple of alligator clips, zip ties, and a cheapo autozone power port are really going to be too much for the average Joe to figure out...

I'm game, just as soon as I get this heap to turn over again. I'll go team pods, and my vote is for highway 56 here in Utard, I mean Utah. Touch of hills, whole lot of tabletop flat.
