Some performance mod questions - CB400F
« on: April 18, 2005, 09:20:07 AM »
Since I'm nearing the end of my rebuild, I've been throwing around some ideas for next year.

I have a 1975 CB400F, currently the only mods being Clubman drop bars, Dyna S ignition, and modern turn/brake lights. I've been thinking of doing a dual-disc conversion next year (maybe with drilled rotors), and possibly switching to mag wheels.

I know Jeff Chenevert has a great deal of material written on the dual disc, but does anyone here have experience switching to mags? Which rims would allow for the same tire sizes as the stock 400F? In the same vein, does anyone have experience in fitting a wheel with a rear disc-brake on this bike?

I'm also interested to know some details on mounting the 400 with a steering dampener. The fork side is an easy solution, but where on the frame can it be attached?

As always, any insight, pictures and tips are appreciated.

Thanks!

You'd think I was in the concourse restoration forum. Surely -someone- out there has done some modern mods to their 400F...

ben, google cb400 with additional key words and you ought to find the page i came across about two weeks ago when searching the web for 550 related stuff, it was a japanese page featuring beautiful cb400s equipped with modern kits available specifically for that model, big bore kits, dual front brakes, forks, swing arms, rear disk breaks, it had it all, including prices in yen;
i couldn't trace it back just now but if i do run across it i'll send it your way...  tomasz

I expect the Japanese site mentioned is

 http://www.mc-again.com/

Unless you can read Japanese, click on "fours only" at the bottom of the homepage, then on the little blue book symbol next to "up" at the bottom of the next page, that will take you to a few pages of pics of all sorts of modified 400Fs- plenty of ideas there for chassis changes, and some engine stuff too (the dry clutch conversion is particularly neat IMO). I don't remember ever seeing a rear disc conversion that used the stock swingarm... though nothing is impossible I guess.

Cheers

I know this thread is dead...But I have a rear disc conversion on a stock swingarm with NO mods to the frame or the swingarm.

Check out the project link .
