Doing a rebuild on the "cheap"
« on: March 05, 2010, 09:20:36 PM »
Well I had some money set aside for my complete CB750 build. Unfortunately, my computer died out on me... Then my wife needed dental work. Here is the progress thus far.

I am now trying to finish this project on the cheap. And quickly as I miss riding.

I am attaching an image of all the things I think I will need. The motor runs nice sounds good and has a little over 30K on the clock. I bought it recently from a guy who said it ran, I was nervous about this until I got it home fixed some wiring and the bike fired right up. I even ran it around the block (Although the carbs were seriously out of adjustment and pissing gas). I did notice thick black sludge from the head (You can see it in the picture) after running the bike for awhile so.... now I'm planning on just freshening up the motor so I can enjoy thousands of trouble free miles  ;)

Anything that I may be missing? This doesn't seem to "cheap" IMHO. This will also be my first motorcycle engine rebuild. I have plenty of experience with carbs and tuning, Just none with tearing into stuff. I will document the engine rebuild here since I am nervous as hell to do it.

Any guidance would be greatly appreciated.

Got lost in the first couple lines. Keep computer going so you can talk to us---and fix your wife-girlfriends teeth and then work on the bike later,or clutch---Sorry---  Fix her up first and get back  :)

then i would just put some money into the carbs and replace the leaky gasket... it should get u throught the season and then you;ll know if the rings are bad or if u need a valve job... is your compression low? how many miles are on this bike? tune the piss outta this thing and u might just realize the old gasket blew from sitting too long and that was the cause of low compression

For the starter block-off plug, I used a cheap, expandable rubber freeze plug. You stuff it in the hole, and tighten the nut, and it expands nice and snug.
Don't fix it if it ain't broke!

Doesn't sound a$$y at all.

Lemmie give you the back story of the bike.

Purchased off previous owner who had cut off all the wires because he wanted a cleaner look for his project. I got it home looked up the wiring diagram and got the ignition circuit rolling. Charged a battery and the bike fired right up. Didn't bother tuning the carbs because I was going with the CycleX Dual carb kit. Unfortunately I ordered it without anyone telling me that it does not work in stock frames. I talked with Ken and we worked out a deal.

Parts/Services purchased so far (Pre unexpected expenses):

  • 35MM BILLET 6061 Clip ons
  • Cafe Seat
  • DMV Fees
  • DYNA S electronic ignition
  • Aluminum Headlight Bracket 35mm
  • Tune up kit (K&N Oil filter, plugs)
  • Braided brake line kit
  • Rebuilt Carbs jetted and modified slides from CycleX
  • CycleX 4-2-1 Exhaust
  • CycleX Aluminum tree top
  • Benjies Euro Headlight
  • Brake rebuild kit
  • Fork seals
  • -2 fork tubes from CycleX
  • Wiring/Fuse for custom harness
  • Grips and new push/pull throttle + perches
  • Aluminum custom oil tank (Currently being made by a hot rod shop in town)
  • CBR929 Rearset
  • Small Battery

So far I have rebuilt the front end and brakes, the tires are great for now. Oh that and my tank "dishes" are done. Just needs some mud and paint.

Only reason why I am tearing into the engine is because of the leak.

The reason the bike is so stripped is because I was checking the mount points for my oil tank. And I am shaving off all the brackets/tabs I don't need. Also In the process of welding up my mounts for the CBR rearsets.

I am a bit farther than that picture shows as the parts needed to make it go are not there ;)

Hey thegabrielj that link went no where near my profile!!! ;D
I think the thing I most like about motorcycling is the speed at which my brain must process information at to avoid the numb skulls who are eating pies, playing the ukulele, applying make-up etc in the comfort of their airconditioned armchairs as they make random attempts to kill me!!!!!!!

I see that you have valve guides on your list.  If you replace those, you'll need to have the valve seats re-cut.  Measure your existing guides first and don't bother replacing them unless they're worn.

Do replace the valve guide seals though, as long as you're inside.
