What Would Cause Oil To Leak Out Of Here?
« on: March 05, 2010, 07:49:14 PM »
I'm guessing I put the wrong bolt in or something to hold the sprocket cover on. When I took it off today oil starting peeing out of the bolt hole. Could this cause any problems in the future? Is oil getting in somewhere it shouldn't be?

Can I just plug this up with the side cover screw to get me back on the rode until I can fix it? Its the screw that is right below the shifter lever.

Not real Sure about the hole.... Does it continue to spout oil if you remove the bolt as it is?  Or was it only a bit of oil when you removed the cover?

On a side note... that chain looks pretty dry and weathered to be riding with   :-\

What bike? The cb750 has a weird oil lub set up on the front sprocket that works at 50+mph I think?

I threw an old chain once and it wound on the front sprocket and put a hole in my engine the size of a half-dollar right there where your blue wire is.

Okay, I drew on your picture.

If the oil is coming out of the hole for bolt "A", then the oil is probably visible above that arrow too.
In which case, probably one or three of the o-rings behind the oil pump are leaky.

Remove the 3 mushroom head screws shown approximately by the green circles, also disconnect the pressure switch wire on the top, a tiny hex nut.

If so, the parts are available from bikebandit and servicehonda.
Honda official part numbers are:
One Large o-ring  = 91302-250-010  [47x3.2mm]    (part #27 on most fiches)
Two small o-rings = 91301-268-020  [13.6x2.4mm]  (part #26 on most fiches)

Good luck, it solved my leak!

The chain isn't to bad actually. For some reason the lube I use turns the chain this weird white color? Man this bike is going to kill me everytime I go to try and fix something, something else screws up!

Oil peeing out of there?
That's way above the oil level in the sump. I assume you mean it pees out with the engine running?
If you're sure it's pressurized oil shooting out, not good. You must have broken into an oil gallery with a too-long bolt and a heavy hand on the driver. I have not heard of this one before, but since that threaded hole is very close to the oil pump a gallery could easily be there. I don't know of any drawing that shows exactly where oil galleries are located, are there any obvious plugged/capped holes in the case around there?
If you did rupture into a gallery I would be more worried about the metal bits pushed into it than the leak.
Such a leak is fairly easy to fix: clean out the hole with brake cleaner and put a drop of hardening permatex aviation gasket goop close to the bottom of the hole. Screw a short set screw into the sealant then turn it back and forth a bit to fully coat the threads. That should seal the hole, then use a shorter cover screw that doesn't hit the set screw.

I'll take a stab at it as well. When you take the sprocket cover off, oftentimes it collects some old oil on the flat bottom surface, which spills out when you remove the cover. That might look like oil was peeing out of the hole itself. Mine was from a leaking shifter seal. I would guess the shifter seal is leaky before the oil pump O-rings, just based on what I've seen.

On the other hand, if pressurized oil really was leaking out, Bodi's got it. And take the oil pan off and clean the strainer while you're in there.

If I just plug this up with a screw could I possibly deprive my engine of oil and lock up the cylinders or create any critical damage? I checked the top end and it is getting oil.

With no bolt in the hole, and the engine running, do great volumes of oil gush out?

Well oil is pouring out with the bike off. Are you asking if the flow increases with the bike on? I have a full level on my dipstick so does that mean all of the critical pieces are being oiled?

I was planning on putting my new carb kits and pods in and getting them synched as well as fixing my charging issue before tackling this. If my dipstick shows good oil level can I continue doing these things first before draining my oil and seeing what I did?

If it were I.... Drain the oil remove the oilpan (good excuse to clean the pan and screen)raise the machine high enough to get a good looksee on the inside if there is no obvious damage, metal shards or a hole I would suspect the oil is coming from somewhere else like the oil pump or a seal. In that case clean the area real well put it back together and follow the new oil that leaks back to its source.

Is there a difference between the amount of oil coming out with the engine running, and not running? We are trying to determine if you have punched through into a high pressure oil passage coming from the oil pump.

I'm now very concerned about the noise you reported while working on your rectifier. Unplug the rect, and, with the bolt lightly screwed in, start the motor and listen for the noise. Also notice if oil is leaking around the bolt faster than with the motor not running.(if you did break into the high pressure oil galley, there will be 50+ psi pushing the oil out) And don't run the bike any longer than it takes to make these observations!

Alright, I just checked and there isn't a difference with the bike on or off.

The only thing that makes a difference is if shes on the kick stand or on the mainstand. If its on the kickstand oil flows more freely. On the mainstand the oil is only dripping out.

Also,  I checked the oil level and its in the middle of the two marks. This is typically where I usually fill my oil up to, do you guys usually try to keep it on the top mark or is anywhere in the serviciable limits alright?

Also, if anyone has their oil pan off and can take a picture of where this screw would break through it would be much appreciated!

The noise doesn't occur when I cut the power to the alternator. It sounds like an electrical winding noise, I think this is normal. My FZR used to do make a similar noise, I'm guessing its just the noise of the alternator working.

OK. One last thing: look closely at the end of the too-long bolt to see if there is any evidence of wear, as if the end of the bolt was rubbing against something moving. Compare the end to one of the other bolts.

Doesn't show any evidence of wear, at all and especially not like its been grinding against something.

The area where the dipstick is, is what the oil pump uses to lubricate the pistons and topend cam area correct? If I'm not losing any oil out of this area shouldn't I be fine? I don't know anything about bottom ends  :-\

Or charging systems for that matter  :D

Your oil fills the sump in the bottom of the motor, and is pumped through the motor to keep all the moving parts happy. As far as oil level, time to read your maintenance section of your manual. The oil leaks more on the side stand, because the oil level is higher on that side of the motor when it's leaning. Imagine a glass with a hole in the side, and filled with water just below the hole: lean the glass over, and the water runs out of the hole. It may be that your bolt has merely pierced through into the sump, but I can't say for sure..

Ya, I understand this is why the oil was leaking more on the side stand. I guess that we won't be able to figiure out what was actually punctured until I take off the oil pan or find a picture of the bottom of an engine without the oil pan  :o

On the bright side, at least you know the high pressure galley from the output of the pump wasn't punctured. :)

Ya, I'm going to get my pods, carb kits, and hopefully my rear fender and rectifier. Once I get all of those on and situated I'll change my oil and take off my oil pan and take a picture. I'm hoping the screw just broke into the sump.

I don't think I would worry too much about it. A tip about how to figure which bolt goes in which hole: hold the part you are bolting into place, and slide the bolts in. The distance they stick out should be roughly the same.

Well I finally got to the point where I can mess with this problem. I took the oil pan off today and felt around inside the oil galley and felt a lose piece of engine casing. Apparently I had used a bolt that was to long and punctured through into the oil galley. This was what I was hoping for and shouldn't be too difficult to fix. If I need to plug up this screw hole what should I use? I was thinking of using JB weld and just trying to squirt it way back into the screw hole then using a shorter screw. Any other ideas? Should I squirt from oil galley side or sprocket cover side?

Heres some pictures of the damage. The tiny piece of engine casing is what broke off. It was very hard to get a picture inside my oil galley since I don't have a stand but I managed!

Where it broke off at

What broke off

Lastly, Im planning on getting new bolts for sprocket cover, stator cover, breather cover, and vavlve cover. Where can I find out what sizes I need for these?

Hey Mike, I would simply glue the piece back in place, without filling the hole. Clean with brake cleaner and a wire brush (and I mean clean the s*** out of it! Get the oil flushed out of the pores of the metal!!!) Use the original JB weld, not the quick stuff, and let it set up for a least 24 hours before screwing in a bolt, to make sure you don't glue the bolt in.

I have some super strong guerilla gluie (super glue) but Im guessing that would melt? It holds anything together and I trust it but Im guessing JB weld is the way to go?

Don't use super glue, don't use gorilla glue. JB Weld is definitely the way to go.
