Hey everyone, just wanted to introduce myself and get a few more opinions on my issues. I've gone through a lot of the site so far and it's been really helpful.

I recently purchased a 74 cb450. I checked it out briefly knowing it was going to need some work. The engine turned over, I got it home and now it seems like it has gone to hell. Pardon my elementary explanation of the issue but I'm not familiar with the full terms yet... when I try the kickstarter (bike in neutral, clutch pulled right?) the shaft will just spin and not catch anything. I can't move the bike while it's in gear which lead me to assume the engine was stuck. I've sprayed the hell out of it with PB Blaster and Seafoam the other day so I'm giving that some time to work. I also unscrewed the oil dipstick and can see the shaft spinning inside and a gear on it which will spin for a second and then nothing. It seems like something is not engaging.

With the clutch lever pulled in, the kick start will not engage on your bike  .
The kick start turns a gear in the tranny, which goes through the clutch to turn the crankshaft.

The electric start turns the crank directly, so it works all the time.

Don't try to start it now that you've sprayed all that stuff in it.

Think about what a clutch does.
It is a stack of plates that are pushed together by springs.  When you pull the clutch lever, the springs compress and the plates disengage.  Basically, the engine becomes seperated from the drive train.  When you pull the clutch lever, the kick-start lever does nothing.  
You should be able to use the electric starter, though.

The bike will not roll in gear- unless you pull the clutch lever.  You will need to get the transmission into neutral to roll the bike (unless you want to pop-start it- another subject entirely)
After your PB Blaster sits for a day, you can try to rock the bike fore and aft to try loosening up the pistons >with the spark plugs out<.   You didn't say, but I assume you poureed the PB in through the spark plug holes?

Just in case some of this junk got past the rings, do not run the bike until you change the oil.  Then change the oil again soon.

that makes sense. i figured i was doing something wrong with the initial procedure. i did pull the plugs and spray directly into the holes and i wasn't planning on starting it with the pb in, just wanted to see if i could get the motor moving.

put the bike in neutral tonight and still won't budge. patience is a virtue i guess.
