Gas is pouring out of the carb
« on: March 04, 2010, 09:17:50 PM »
Alright so I just bought a 73 cb750 for $200. It has been sitting in a garage for the last 5 years, so the first thing I do is goto clean out the carb and put new fuel in. However as soon as I goto open the gas valve on the tank it starts to pour out of the carbs into the air filter. And I'm talking a nice steady stream of gas is going everywhere. And if I put my finger over the hole to stop the gas pouring out it just goes down the tube on the bottom of the bowl instead, but only on the one carb and the others are dry. Did I screw something up when I had the bowls off cleaning it, or is something out of adjustment...

Either the float or float valve are stuck open.  If it's not stuck really bad, a few smacks on the side of the carb with a screwdriver handle will often free it up.

What happened to the intake of that carb?  Looks flattened on the right side.

Good eye, Gordon. That carb looks like it has seen some sort of trauma...

Yeah it is flattened, the bike was smashed up in a garage with garbage thrown all over it. I'm not sure if the guy dropped the bike a few times or if he tried to work on it himself. Anyways... I'm not going to lie I'm new to working on carbs. Tapping didn't work, I'm guessing the float valve is the rod in the middle of the bowl that the float pushes up it appears to be free is their something I'm missing.

focuz, thank you for being honest about your knowledge of carbs. Read everything you can find here, especially about float levels and float valves. Welcome to the club!!

Be sure you did not put that float in upside down. It can happen. If not, then I vote for the float valve is stuck. Is that tank clean with no crapola inside? A very small particle can cause this and many other carb problems.
When you get a chance psot a pic of that 73.

HEHE... LOL It was me I'm a big dumby.

When I took the bowls off to clean it all down one of the brackets for the float got bent so it wasn't moving up as far as it should have. I noticed it by comparing with the other carb, I just bent it back and no more leak. Thanks guys
