How do you lock your bike?
« on: March 12, 2010, 08:47:47 AM »
Hey all-

Basically, the thread subject explains my question in full. I have no garage, so I park my CB500 on the walkway up to my house, which is about 3 feet from the sidewalk, with the steering lock on. (Well, I DID park my bike there, now it's in about a thousand pieces in the shed in my backyard.) Before I tore it down, I wasn't terribly concerned with it getting messed with, as it looked like a righteous piece of dump. However, once it gets painted and reassembled, it just might look halfway decent. So what (if anything) do you guys do when you park your ride in public?

A kryptonite disk lock through the rear sprocket WITH the curly bright green lanyard to the handlebars so I don't forget it's there. And the forks locked. They may carry it away but this makes it a little harder to do. Not much can be done if they really want it.

i got one of these nifty suckers... http://www.masterlockcycle.com/product_9link.shtml one end around the swingarm, the other end fits perfectly around most street sign/ parking meter poles. its a little heavy, but does the job well!

When i ride with my friends we cable our bikes together over night. Since mine is the crappiest it's basically a boat anchor to thieves who want to steal a CBR or new harley. If i'm on my own i usually wrangle into some awkward corner and lock the steering so it would be impossible to get out without carrying it.

It stays in my garage most nights though. If there is no chance of rain it sits in the driveway.

What's the going rate for a midget these days? Should I check eBay, or are they available at most motorcycle shops?  ;D

The KLR---sometimes i lock the forks, rarely do I use the cable
The 920-- Lock the forks
Honda...no fork lock, no ignition switch, no place to carry a cable, it probably wont get locked at all, but it also wont be a bike that sits in a parking lot for any real amount of time

When traveling I look for other bikes to be near, especially at the front door of large hotels...........when alone on the road I sleep next to it.  Out of sight is always safe! I sometimes use the fork lock.......even in my garage. I have never carried a cable, disk, or chain lock. But then again, I never stay in the big city.

Locks are pretty much for your own peace of mind, short of the midget mentioned or a well placed triple tap, nothing will stop a lowlife thief from stealing anything they want.

The best lock is INSURANCE... I had a CBR1000 Kryptonited at a bar where I worked...I came out the bike was gone. Few months later I get a call from the police to come ID my bike ...Yup, sure enough its mine STILL locked up. They could carry it away but they couldnt get the lock or the wheel off! Of course that pissed them off so the body work was trashed.

But now I don't lock my bikes. I have full coverage on every bike I own if some creep wants the damn thing they are going to steal it lock or no lock.

Do what makes you feel good.

I have to say a midget with a penchant for kicking bad guys in the balls would be pretty cool though.

A sticker that says "Will explode if moved without key inserted".
I don't have a motorcycle, sold it ('85 Yamaha Venture Royale).  Haven't had a CB750 for over 40 years.

Locks are pretty much for your own peace of mind, short of the midget mentioned or a well placed triple tap, nothing will stop a lowlife thief from stealing anything they want.

Locks keep your bike safe from opportunistic thieves and people who just feel like messing around with it.  They try to move it or see that it's locked, and they move along to take somebody else's stuff that isn't locked.

I agree that a determined thief will take your bike if he wants it, but not all thieves are that determined.

same as your car,,i always use one of those steering wheel locks that obscure steering,,we call them "club locks "here in australia,,thats the best known brand and it stuck as a common name for them all,,move em on to someone elses car,,,ive had two cars stolen!1st one was my 68 monaro in 77,,it was parked out side loaded up for a camping trip, when i went to the police station they sort of shuffled around slowly getting the forms for me to fill,,untill i told them i had an anshuzt 22 semi auto and a mossberg 12 guage pump in the boot(trunk),then it was straight on the two way etc...
