Motorcycles wanted, norton, triumph, BSA...
« on: March 10, 2010, 08:44:14 PM »
Anyone else seeing this stuff on the bikes section of Craigslist? I've been flagging as 'prohibited' as quick as I can, why don't these guys have to play by the rules? There are online text messaging services and when they've been posting their phone numbers I send about ten text messages warning them to take it down or I'll sign their number up for telemarketing  ;D We're all looking, I guess these are the same guys that cut in line.

I don't get it either?  Are you saying you can't post a "wanted" classified on CL?

yeah, it's prohibited by CL - that's what the wanted section is for. and it's not fair for everyone else watching the classifieds daily. it's annoying, especially if you're bike hunting.

i guess it's someone local, they've been popping up on my local CL sometimes more than once per day. i figured it was happening everywhere.

i've posted wanted ads in the craigslist motorcycles section, and been very annoyed when the ad was flagged. sure it's technically not allowed, but where are you supposed to run such an ad? in the general wanted section? do you really think it's going to be seen by the target audience? it's a motorcycle section, and at least here it's where you're going to go for any ads related to motorcycles. i hate sticklers for the rules on there, at least when it comes to such things. dealer ads? ok, i get it. some guy looking for an old bike? leave em alone.

While I agree with you..... why are there rules if no one follows them? or enforces them?

Like I said... I agree. I post sales on parts and such and sometimes people assume I'm spamming.

There is no discussion for flagging.... it either gets flagged or it doesn't.

All you can do is post another ad.

Oh well.... at least it's still free right?  :D

Paulages, you just bought a Norton didn't you, did you get it off CL or in the classifieds? Or I'll give you an example from my experience. I bought a '72 Combat Commando for 1k bucks. Popped up on Craigslist in the bikes section and I hauled over there and came home with the bike within a few hours. The seller was a no-nonsense guy who just wanted the bike gone, it was his first time using CL. I'd bet just about anything if he had gone in there and seen 'WANTED: Nortons, Triumphs, old motorcycles - top dollar paid!!", me, you, joe-blow, none of the guys who spend their time bike hunting every day would have gotten a chance at that bike. The guy who spent two minutes posting a want ad would have. Hardly seems fair to me. I'm definetly not a stickler for rules or a hall monitor type guy, just want an even playing field. Same applies to the many guys on the board here who got their bikes cheap off CL. Theres a good chance, especially with first time sellers who are trying to get a bike moved out of their garage, that those bikes could have been hauled away by the guy who's posting want ads everyday all over the state.

to be fair, you could post the same ad, no? i mean, yes it would be annoying if you couldn't find any bikes because some dude was out there snatching up every deal- hell, i've been accused of being that guy, but only from serious diligence watching CL- but at certain point that's going to stop working. the guy can't buy everything. in any case, i don't think it really works like that. the barn finds are out there, and even portland with a very active CL motorcycle section, the deals still come up.

anyway, if there guy seems big time then i get it. i've posted want ads before that said something like, "wanted: triumph or BSA OIF parts," and been flagged. not the same.

The guy that I forwarded a bunch of 'cut that #$%* out' messages to posted 3 want ads within two days, and one every couple days before that. I got sick of seeing it, and nothing even half decent had come up in a while, so I was getting suspicious.

I agree about the parts or specific bike want ads. I never flag that stuff. If you need a head for your BSA or you're looking for some bizzar-o Italian bike with a left handed headlight I say good luck, post all the want ads you can! If someone's looking for "any old motorcycles from the 60's & 70's" well then.... me too and about a hundred other local dudes! It would gum up the works if all 100 of us posted a want ad every day. I've nabbed a fair share of stuff doing as you say, 'serious dilligence'. I've been thinking about trying it American Pickers style this summer and rattling the doors at some of these barns you see all over the south.

And I gotta ask, did you get your Norton off CL?  ;D

i did. first responder, but he wanted way too much. waited a week or so until the tire-kicking had settled down, and got for much closer to my original offer.
