Hoosier Daddy intro!
« on: February 27, 2010, 08:25:58 PM »
Hey all, brand new member! Today I picked up a '74 CB350F. Lurked here for a while before clinching the deal to learn what I could, without being able to use the search function that is. :D  Some here may know me from NGWclub.com or dotheton.com forums.
A little about me, I am 47 years young, married for the second time 10 years now. (first time was 13 years, 20 with the windchill!)
We have 4 daughters, 1 grand-daughter and another on the way.
Got my first motorcycle back in '82 if you don't count the mini-bikes I had as a kid. It was actually a pair of BSA 650's, a stock Thunderbolt and a Lightning that I took off the fenders and added a set of clubmans and thought there was no other bike to have but a cafe... Then came a loooong lay over and last summer stumbled onto a outside the barn find '81 GL1100, tore it down to the sandblasted frame and you guessed it, in process of cafe-ing it out. On a search for a replacement engine I got a nice one, along with a parts bike and various boxes of "stuff".
Well, as I started out, today I swapped the Old BattleAxe parts bike for my new SOHC4. She's going to be my GL's "Lil Sister" and sorry purists, you bet your sweet bippy I'm going to cafe this one out as well! Once I poke around a little more, get to know people, find out what I can and can't say ::), I will post up some pics and start asking questions, but for now I am going to explore this whole new world.

Well, this already answers my 1st question. No wonder my right leg is sore, no battery.
Alternators need magnets to generate power.  They can be permanent magnets or electromagnets.  All the SOHC4s have electromagnets, meaning you must have electrical power in order to make electrical power.  Without ANY electrical power, the coils won't spark the spark plugs.  You must have a battery to start the SOHC4.

Well, here are pics from last night.
Starting out with her "Good Side" and the surpringly good condition of all the 'portant stuff.

And now the side that I think was layed down, little roadrash on the seat, exhaust has home made mufflers, headlight ear, handlebar are a little tweeked and the side cover, turn signal lens is gone... none of which is a big deal for a cafe but would add up the $ on a concurs restoration.

YES!
I was going to remove them and post an add in the for sale section, but you beat me to it. Make me an offer, I need funds for the build.
