Arrrghh......
« on: January 15, 2006, 03:06:19 PM »
I have an NOS (and expensive) front fender for my bike.  (Can you guess where this story is going?) While working out in the garage I had it removed it from the bike so I could work on and clean up some things.  As I opened a cabinet door to get out some cleaner a can falls and dings the fender.   Not bad, but I know it's there.

In the furniture biz, that's called "antiquing".  It adds value!   Random application is key.  Sounds like you're a natural expert in the process!

I was removing the gastank cap and latch yesterday to take the tank to the painter. With a small blunt chisel I managed to remove both rivets without drilling so I could reuse them. I was so happy that it was so easy, when I noticed that the latch was being bent... Imagine what happened when I tried to straighten it. Worst part is that, before I got the pliers, I knew what was going to happen...

would a british one work?  or maybe icelandic.  i can see why you might not want to use an australian wheel tho  ;)

I don't know how bad the ding in his fender is, but odds are good it could be ironed out on an English wheel like it was never there.

I feel your pain. Much like the freshly painted (insert part of item here) that gets gouged upon installation. Patina/antiquing or not - it gets the blood boiling. ;D

there is a similar tool that uses a vibrating/hammering motion... looks like it might work a bit better.  can't remember the name of it though

It's called a planisher.  But, it is not going to be kind to chrome surface.
The English wheel has posibilities. But, the wheels will have to be in a higher state of polish than the chrome or it will imprint any imperfections into the chrome.

Taking dents out of chrome without rechroming is an art form.  Such craftsmen aren't in high demand due to low volume work output and aren't easy to find.

I'm far from expert at the process.  But, I have had some success with wooden blocks used as anvils, (fine grain with density selected for application).  And, leather, wood, or plastic hammers, with wooden forms that are used to push or press the metal back to original shape.  Very small taps or just slow even pressure is applied to form the metal back into place.

I took a headlight bounce dent out of a front fender years ago.  No one's been able to find where it was until I told them where to look and how to find the very slight imperfection that remains due to the stretched metal.  (Yes, I know, heat/cool cycles will shrink the metal.  But, I don't want to risk discoloring the chrome.)

Well  I don't think there is a bike out there woith out ascar of some sort.... will have to agree  with the others...english wheel or plannishing hammer will not be nice to the chrome finish...plannishing hammer  would be like beating it with a ballpeen hammer only faster...if the dent isn't too bad....live with it..or as my  father said after I dented a fender...polish the hell out it and no one will see the dent from the reflection....lol...... then he fixed it and sent it for rechroming.....

The Ausie one might work, but feeding that damn Kangaroo might prove a challenge. ;);) Isn't an Ausie wheel square???

If you insist on pounding out the dent make sure you use a dolly on the other side, otherwise it will make it worse. Work slow with a hard rubber hammer and a steel dolly and away she goes  ;D

Another possibility is to support the fender with a shot bag(leather or canvass bag filled with lead shot) this is a tool used in hand forming sheet metal before wheeling and planishing.
Good luck.

This is an outstanding idea  ;D. I can tell you I AM STEALING IT ;) ;D . I have pounded many a bent up fender in a sand box to back it. Basically the same idea. Eats up the excess bang and keeps the metal from growing to much. Works damn nice.  ;D
