The bling looks mahvelous.  The F's storage bin is so cool - wish the K had it.

What's the story on the shocks?  Are they original, NOS, aftermarket, details?

Original, just had the springs powder coated.

Last shiny bit to go on is now installed (unless I'm forgetting something):

Chain guard to clean and install
Clean and install the rear grab rail, signal lights and brake light (complete with wiring)
Fix and install exhaust
Fire up for first time in way too many years
Balance carbs

Can't forget, install bodywork

RIDE! ;D

Winter came back with a vengeance - 4+ inches of crazy wet snow.  Got the pipe cleaned up with some phosphoric and off to my buddy to weld up today.

While I wait for him to finish that up, I can probably button up the rear fender, tail light and license plate mount.  More cleaning, polishing and wrenching.

So this is what it looks like outside after yesterday.  Talk about winter back with a vengeance, hardly any visible snow 2 days ago!

Already a lot has melted since last night.  If it wasn't for a bunch of shovelling yesterday, there wouldn't be any visible concrete on my driveway.

Well, the rear end is all buttoned up now.  New rear fender installed.  Last powder coated piece in the form of the tail light / license plate mount is now installed.  Only thing missing is the tail end of that stock 4-into-1 muffler.

Wiring is all done and everything works!  Seems like switches and relays were a little slow to react the first time after 4 years, but after cycling everything a few times, its all good.

Well, he's the one that taught me to enjoy having vehicles that clean, so probably not too shocked  Keep in mind, definitely didn't start with the basket case that so many people on here are stuck with.  Thanks again for the comments though!

By the way, thoroughly enjoyed your electrical test video.  Hope you have it all ready for when 'IT' arrives!

BTW, anyone have a photo of the routing of all of the various stock vent tubes on the bottom side of the bike including approximate exposed lengths?  I know where the overflows for the carbs go, but want to confirm battery vent, gas tank overflow and emissions thingy drain.  Which one goes through the holder on the center stand?  Thanks!

Well, thanks to my Dad for remembering to check in on my thread as he was able to tell me where all of the lines are routed.  I wasn't looking around enough under the bike to notice the muffler hanger and the hose holder incorporated on the back.  The reason the line from the fuel tank overflow and the condensation chamber drain are so long is because they run back and route through this holder!  The battery vent runs through the holder on the centre stand.

Will post a picture with everything routed under there when I have a chance.

Hi Kap384,

I've just traveled up to the north of England from Staffordshire to fetch my restoration project: a 1977 CB750F2, and then came across your project on the web, what a fantastic job you've done. I'm well impressed!

I've attached a photo of mine, it has some none standard bits though?

Can you tell me what sort of paint you've used for the engine, It looks just like the original finish.

I look forward to seeing your project completion, take care!

Dave

Thanks for the compliment.  You've got a GREAT looking 'F' there.  Is that an '75-'76 'F' engine though?  Only thing non-standard looking is the engine, front fender should be chrome and the pipe doesn't look quite like stock.  It all looks good though.

Actually used a Duplicolor Acrylic Enamel becuase it matched the colour the best.  I'm worried about how well it'll stand up to chips and especially gas though.  Might be pulling the motor to repaint after the first season.

Seems like most people stick with Duplicolor or VHT engine paints.  Some go POR-15 too.

I'd personally grab the semi-gloss to satin blacks for both Duplicolor and VHT and see what looked best.

So here is the pic of the hose routing I promised

The line running through the holder on the centre stand is the battery vent line.
The long black line exiting out the bottom of the muffler hanger is the condensation chamber vent and the orangy coloured line is the gas tank overflow line.

Hi again,

Yes the engine matches the chassis on the documents, when you look close you can see where the previous owner has tried to remove the black paint on both the front forks and engine, just makes it less work for me i suppose?

The front fender I intend re-chroming although the paint job is very good? And i think my rear shocks are from an older model, this is all new to me though.

Thanks for the paint tips, take care.

Dave

Very nice work! Where did you get the chrome chain guard? Mine is a bit bashed up, and while I can get it rechromed, a replacement part would be swell...

Thanks wohali.  Have been following your project closely.  Great work and good to see another Canadian project.  Chain guard is original.  As I've mentioned, I was lucky enough to start with an original bike in very good condition.  The vast majority of pieces just needed 30 years of grime cleaned off.

So, got the most important bling on tonight:

Glad I thought ahead way back in 2002 to buy up a new muffler from Honda, as it is now discontinued. 8)

Only negative, the original muffler never had this goofy warning:

Oh well.

But looking pretty doesn't matter if she doesn't run.............

So, turns out I'm a dumbass.  Obviously forgot to drain carbs #3 & #4, so varnish galore.  Carbs coming off, but hoping I remembered to drain #1 & #2 so I only have half the job :-\   Doesn't help that work is likely taking me out of town for the next 2 weeks.

The adventure continues......

Turns out all 4 carbs were gummed up.  Should have at least drained 5 years ago, or grabbed a bottle of this ::)

CRC brand of carb cleaner seems to be the best I found for eating throughthe varnish.  Accelerator pump was torn too, so waiting for a replacement, then set float heights, re-assemble carbs, confirm accelerator pump is operating and install back on the 'F'

<iframe src="http://player.vimeo.com/video/23713923?title=0&amp;byline=0&amp;portrait=0" width="400" height="225" frameborder="0"></iframe><p><a href="Not a valid vimeo URL">750F first start[/url] from kap384 on Vimeo.</p>

Sequence of events in video:

1) First attempt to fire in 4-5 years.  Bravely filming from the very first attempt.  Inadvertently squeeze makeshift gas tank and overpower floats, pouring gas out the overflow tubes
2) Clear carbs out, manage to get signs of life, but most it ever does is barely run on cylinders 1 & 2.  Not a spark issue, must be fuel.  Pull #4 float bowl and it's all varnish.  Dammit, I'm an idiot.  It's one thing when you buy a used bike and the PO left it full of gas, but I WAS THE ONE TO PARK THE OLD GIRL!!  All I had to do was drain those carbs.  Sure thought I did, oh well
3) After pulling carbs, lots of cleaning and discovering a torn accelerator pump, wait 1 week for a new one.  With carbs reassembled, accelerator pump function confirmed, they were re-installed and I again bravely filmed from the first moment.
4) Fired up nicely, but I have a busted choke cable.  Pay no attention to where choke knob is located, it no longer reflects the position of the choke blades.  New one on order tomorrow.  Good news, all 4 pipes warmed up right away and the cold blooded girl was pretty easy to get going.

So, the bike would run but wouldn't idle. Decided the pilot screws should be cleaned (as I avoided pulling them earlier), so off came the carbs.  Long story, but in the process, bent the tip of a pilot screw, lost a washer on the shop floor and found all but one o-ring destroyed!

Was happy to source the tiny o-rings from a local seal shop, but no luck finding a washer.  Ended up buying a bag of tiny remote control airplane washers and machining done the outside by jamming it onto a drill bit and spinning it against a file.  Eventually got it perfect.

While the carbs were on the bench, I made sure the slow jets were clean with a combination of carb cleaner and compressed air.  Couldn't remember how much effort I put into them the first time.

Carbs go back on the the old girl fires up after cranking a bit.  Idles fine, but not as smooth or as low an RPM as it used to.  Big old primary chain rattling pretty good.  This weekend, balance those carbs.  Then it's done!!!

Thanks everyone!

So, got the carbs synched.  More videos should be inserted shortly, but this is it idling unbalanced:

Still going to check timing, but much better with all cylinders pulling the same vacuum now.

Running, so with the coaxing from some friends that were helping me synch, I decided to put the bodywork on and take it for its first ride in 5 years.  Outdoor shots to come to give it justice, but here she is, dirty after the ride:

Probably only 10 miles with my buddies, but all seemed good. Now for a good once over and a timing check.
Also, need to clean up the tank badges and install side cover ones.

As well, these covers aren't staying.  Not the best paint match, so I'm going to get a perfect match soon and spray my shiny new Frankenstuff covers.

Maybe clean pics tomorrow.

So, carbs were synch'd as previously mentioned, but the parents came down this weekend, so I took the opportunity to try and smooth out the idle with the help of my Dad.  Think I may still have some carb dirtiness or possible spark issues, but pretty damn smooth at this point.  Will put some hard miles on it tomorrow and see if that smoothes things out ;D

Thanks geemann!

While checking the timing, noticed that the light actually cut out a few times. On further investigation, I could get the #4 plug boot to show NO conductivity.  Took apart and the resistor tested fine, so it was the boot itself.  Some new NGK boots, and it purrs pretty damn nice now.
