TANK HELP
« on: March 09, 2010, 07:14:59 AM »
okay. finally decided to get off my bum and get the 550 finished up. when i started it up my neighbor noticed some flashes over the carbs. i looked down to see a pretty light show where gas was being sprinkled on top of the carbs... found a pretty good leak at the inside of the tunnel portion of the tank.
so thats the problem....
i have not been able to find anyone that sells repro honda tanks. or the few i found want big bucks. and im scared of a used tank because i may spend just as much and still have a rust/crud issue.
so the dilema is, do i pick up an afmk "generic" or try to stay honda?

or does anyone know of a place that makes reproduction or even fiberglass CB tanks?
any help is apprecitated

I've been round and round with tanks. $300 is the swing point. below that you get a used tank and all the risk that goes with that, crud and dents. Above that, you get a new or reconditioned tank that you don't have to worry about.  THese guys will look at your tank and tell you if it is salvageable for no charge. They did one for me. It wasn't repairable and they sent it back.  If it is repairable, well, $300.

I settled on a used one from ebay for about $125. Its sound, but has a small dent, and I think I'll have Moyers treat it to keep it that way

cool, appreciated. i may have to go ahead and see what i can find afmk at the local harley shop for now. im more about getting her down the road at this point. may look at a repair later.
i could try and repair it my self but the chances are more problems are probably high.... its pretty nasty in there.

I bought a Honda 550 tank on e-bay that was virtually rust free and very solid.  Paid $35+ shipping.  You could always see if there is one for your bike on there.
