cb500/550 deep sump oil pan?????
« on: March 09, 2010, 10:12:28 AM »
When I checked the "Benellipart link in Georges post I noticed a pic of this oil pan. I printed the picture and compared it to a cb550 pan and it looks like an exact match. If so, it would be a nice addition to any race motor. Worth looking into for anyone presently racing this engine.  Any opinions on using the Bennelli pickup or extending the honda strainer pickup??

Still just throwing it out there,

The CB650 sump pan is a direct bolt on and is quite a bit deeper than the 500/550.

Don't forget to lower your oil pickup if you are changing pans?

I believe it's around a 1/3 litre. It may interfere with some aftermarket exhaust as it's about 16mm deeper. It is however well finned and has a nice baffle around half the oil pickup.

On our Cb500 racer we use also the 650 oilpan and pickup.
Now the total oil capacity is about 3,9 litres.
I had to grind off some cooling ribs to fit it above the  exhaustpipes collector.

Looking to replace the pan for my 72 cb500. From what I'm reading, this won't fit, correct?

On our Cb500 racer we use also the 650 oilpan and pickup.

Not necessarily plug and play because of the pickup.  I think it may need to be massaged in a way, can't remember.  But the pan is a direct fit, just a bit deeper.   Using this pan also allows the use of the 650's primary chain tensioner too.

Back to the start of the threat:

A lot of Benelli drivers use the oil pan of the CB 650 (of course including the oil pickup).
So you can match Honda and Benelli oil pans.
So you can also use the big special oil pan from "Benelli parts".

Regards

Anton

By now you know the pan fits. The only hindrance might be clearance if you use a header, this pan is 15-16mm deeper. If it's a 500 you won't need the gearbox trochoid pump feed so either use the 650 oil pickup & block that off or pick up a CB400F pickup, cut off the neck (longer plus uses an o-ring) and weld it to your 500 pickup to extend it. Then just cut off the legs that hold it off the bottom of the pan as the 650 pan has those three legs cast in.
