Took the GTX to go and take care of my Dad. Everything was fine, til I was on my way back home and pulled away from a stoplight. I went from 1st to 2nd, with no problem. Then, when I went for 3rd, it wasn't there? ??? I quickly tried 4th and IT wasn't there either! :-\ Yep, I had Reverse, 1st and 2nd! The car sits too low and I'm too big around, to be able to get under it to check if the linkage had come off or not. So, I got it home bwst I could (about 12 - 15 miles, with some hills). Got it home and put it up on the ramps. The linkage is intact and moves like it is supposed to. Jacked the rear up, had Joey turn the wheels to see if I could go under the car and make it go into gear? 8) Nope! So, now I'm draining the trans to pull the side cover and see what happened. Never been into a car trans before, but I'm hoping a pin has come out in the shift mechanism in the side cover. Any input, would be appreciated. I will be in and out, til I get the cover off and see what happened. ???

Appreciate that, I've sent one right back at you. :)

Working on getting the side plate off and this could take a while. Between my age and energy level not being what it used to be AND the fact that the P.O. seems to have welded rear supports on the exhaust (I'll have to drop the exhaust to get at that side plate).

Doesn't help that I had a bad time today, with the fact that Brenda's not here. Worst one I've had, to date and haven't had one like it either.

I don't know anything about GTX transmissions.

But I'm sorry your having a tough day.

Hang in there Bill.

It will get better (both you and the car  ;))

Thanks Tim, It HAS been quite a day plus, we're supposed to have thunderstorms this evening, tonight and tomorrow. This doesn't help, since my work area is out on the driveway.

I'm trying to hang in there, I can't afford to give up trying.

Hope it's not too bad Bill, doesn't sound like you blew anything up, just lost 3rd and 4th. Sounds like something is wrong with the selectors, hopefully its just a cir-clip or something like that...

That's what I'm thinkin'. I mean, no noise. Reverse, 1st and 2nd work great! Just, when you go for 3rd and 4th, there's nothing. I don't know how the thing is setup, but if there's a roll pin, shear pin or anything like that, I'm hoping that a new pin, clip or whatever, like that, will fix it up. The trans was coated in grease! :o >:( Sure hated to find THAT! I am wishing that I'd been under it before now and cleaned things up, at least. ::) I'LL definitely be doing something about rear exhaust supports!

Yeah Tramp, Tim quoted what I had previously said about the linkage. It's definitely inside the trans. Should be in the side plate with the shift forks. Gladly, it wasn't hung between 2 gears at the same time.

Anybody know where there is a parts breakdown on the trans in the GTX? I need to know how the shift forks are set up, if there is a shear pin in there, that could have been sheared or what. ???

Bill, if nobody can come up with a diagram, you might go down to your local library and look in the reference section. Most libraries have old chilton and motor manuals that go wayyy back. Photocopy the pics and take em' home. Hope all goes well....jim

I should have thought of that, some time back, I was down there looking at some old motors manuals! Well, it's been at least a couple of years back or so, cause I was there with Brenda. If she'd have still  been here, she'd probably have already reminded me of that! :-[

Even if worst comes to worst and you can't figure it out easily Bill, it shouldn't be too tough to undo the u-joint and unbolt the tranny from the bellhousing so a pro can repair it. Heck, you'll already have the exhaust out of the way. If you've already drained the transmission oil, did you find anything suspect in it?
Good luck!!

Don't give us that I can't afford it BS Bill!!!.............You could sell some of your bike parts (or even bikes!!) to get that trans gone thru (and of course a new clutch while you're in there!!). I can't think of a better time for this to have happened...................(You've got other vehicles)........Yank the trans....send it off........get flywheel machined, new clutch(check all linkage, pivot points,etc.).....put it all back and go on your merry way.

Yeah, I'm getting ready to pull the trans out and open it up. Seems like it has to be in the side plate, with a shift fork. Was nothing in the oil AND the only obvious problem is that 3rd and 4th gear, don't happen. Thanks, biggest problem is, I'm not as good on this driveway action as I used to be some years ago. Gotta work around the weather now. Supposed to be rain til Saturday.

What I can't afford is, the Keisler trans that I'd LIKE to have (with 5 or 6 speeds) to get it more manageable on the road (dropping the engine speed for better mpg, etc.) Don't need a new clutch, it's got a Zoom clutch in there now, that is only about 3yrs old. As a matter of fact, I have already mentioned previously, that I am going to thin things out AND will be putting the GPZ up for sale anyway ( I had already decided that awhile back). So Mr. B, interested in an 83' GPZ1100? I know that the GTX isn't the only wheels I have, but to have it down, means that I can't jump in it and go. I had plans for it for today and now, I'll have to back up and regroup. This car is like a theraphy thing with me. AND, I was using it like that yesterday, when it developed this problem. Anyway, when weather permits, I'll drop the trans, find the problem, fix it and get it back on the road.

This may sound stupid, but, did you check the shifter topside.
Had a soda can once that stuck on the side of the shifter
caused the same problem.

No, it's definitely in the trans. Thanks for the thought though.

From the photo that fishhead posted, it looks like the problem is gonna be a broken part. :-\ Either a shift fork or a shift fork shaft. Doesn't look like there is a shear pin, or such involved. ::) Might know. Got a pretty full day today, so I don't know if I'll be able to pull the trans today or not.

Before you pull the trans, make sure the nut that is holding the 3/4 shift lever to the 3/4 shift shaft is tight and that the shaft spins with the lever.

Maybe even pull off the shift lever and see if you can put it in 3/4 by turning the shaft (and check the shift lever/ shift shaft for a tight fit- it may be stripped at that junction)

I DID do that, but just for the sake of making sure, I'll try it once more. IF it keeps me from going any further into it, it'd definitely be worth a shot!  Thanks for that! Anything offered, helps! ;)

Okay, I HAVE doublechecked AND the probl;em is in the area of the shiftfork. The shaft of the shift mechanism is not splined on my A833 trans. It has a slightly retangular shaped shoulder that the linkage plate is bolted to. So, I have decided to drop the left exhaust pipe and see if I can pull the side plate off without pulling the trans. If I can, maybe I can take care of it, without going that far. Not too excited about going into it any further that I have to, at this point. We're supposed to have severe thunder storms coming in this evening. Gotta go for now. :)

Well folks, I had broken the 3-4 shift fork! Anybody got one in their back pocket? ???

Now, I have to locate one of those, so if anyone knows of a source, I'll be checking back, off and on.

Well, I've located some in Ohio and I have ordered both the 3-4 shift fork AND went ahead and also ordered the 1-2 shift fork as well. Looking at about $100 before shipping is added.

Good thing is, there is no other damage AND the 3-4 shift fork snap with a clean break, so there are no loose parts to try to find. I'm puzzled why that one broke though, instead of the 1-2 fork. Doesn't make much sense to me.

Well, I'm surprised! I was figuring on about $100 before shipping charges and it was almost $110 WITH UPS charges. Anyway, looks like the ol' GTX will sit for the weekend anyway. That sucker sitting up on the ramps and jackstands, looks like a ship in dry dock! :-\
