Pneumonia .... Again!
« on: March 10, 2010, 12:36:35 PM »
I spent most of yesterday in the Hospital ER.
Morphine, xray, CT scan.  Yup, pneumonia.  Upside, no PE this time, antibiotic IV.  More antibiotic pills for the next few days.  But, said I could go home.

Tried to do without, but needed Vicodin this morning, just to get out of bed.

I was thinking about times before antibiotics and pain killers.  What a horrible and painful way to go.  Must breathe, sharp stabbing pain for each short breath, can't lay down without searing pain. Yuck!
Morbid detail.  When you belch the esophagus swells sharply into the lungs.  Like getting stabbed in the lung on the inside.  Who knew there were so many nerve endings in the lungs?

Fortunately, typing on a keyboard doesn't quicken one's breath.  It's those deep breaths that hurt like a mofo.
Does typing qualify as operating machinery?

Hey, it's the open forum, right?

Hope you feel better soon.

Being the skeptic that I am; I always respond to those who thank some deity for the health care I am receiving that I am glad I live now, that I feel  privileged to be receiving a scientifically developed penicillin derivative rather than one of the unlucky people in a field hospital at Gettysburg just before Lincoln arrived.

First and foremost feel better. One of the lesser know causes of some of these bouts people have is acid reflux. At times someone has a reflux in deep sleep and droplets of gastric juices are taken into the bronchial passages and lungs. Sometimes this causes a cough, asthma attacks, or the irritation can set up a hospitable environment for bacteria and viruses. My brother is a pulmanologist and he clued me in on that.
The real widespread use of antibiotics came about due to WWII. Before that you lived or died. As a kid in the 1950's I had a bad infection on my leg. My Doctor was trained in the late 1920's and he told me that what only took a week to clear up now, would have caused me months of drainage and possible amputation when he first started practicing. Timing is everything.

But we were boys, and boys will be boys, and so they will. To us, everything was dangerous, but what of that? Had we not been made to live forever?

Get better Lloyd, how long ago was the last time you had it?

Two, maybe three years.  I tried to forget about it.  Ah, September 08, wife tells me.

Thanks for all the well wishes.

Now if the fever will go down, I'll know I'm making progress.

BobbyR,
I'm going to take your post about reflux to the doctor tomorrow.  I do get heart burn periodically.

Get well TT I've had it myself 3-4 times including once where I wound up in hospital and the family gathered, the worst was when they drained pus out of my chest cavity with a needle the size of a grease gun, Ive been lucky lately because of the flu shots and the pneumonia shot I get every once in a while.

Did you get a pneumonia shot?  The only time I've had it was 6 months after the shot.  Needless to say, I don't get one anymore.  I got by without the hospital, but man, was I sick.  Just take it easy, Lloyd, and don't try to come back too soon.

TT, that blows!  hope you recover faster than my 4-year-old.
He's had it now 2 full weeks.  He gets croup easily, and we usually have a day or 2 of him slowly getting worse, so we have time to get him in to see the Ped.
This one started out of the gate with a trip to the ER in a shiney ambulance late one nite.  Had him on oral and inhaled steroids + antibiotics.
He's a tough kid, but this is bad Sht!

Regardless of what you might think of me, I have nothing against you.
I hope you get better as this stuff is the gateway for even worse health issues. Not saying you are old but many people that are advanced in years(70+), this is one of the main causes it seems of the deterioration of their health.
Get well soon.
